Refilling 1lb. propane tanks

I purchased an adapter to refill 1lb. tanks from my 20lb. tank at home to save time and money. I filled 2 tanks and placed them in my storage compartment and traveled to the campground. When it came time for dinner, I opened the compartment and was greeted by a strong propane smell! Apparently one of the cylinders was leaking propane. From now on I will be buying 1lb. tanks as it is not work the risk.

Have you thought of getting a propane tree for a 20 lb tank. It comes with two hoses that hook up to stoves and you can attach a gas lamp on top. You can pick them up at Walmart.

Wow... I guess you found out why its illegal to refill 1lb tanks - their valves just aren't designed for it.

I used to carry an old 20 pounder until I got a Y-adapter and hose from CW that gave a QCC connector for my Porta-Chef BBQ.

If it's illegal to refill them why do they sell a fitting to do just that.

They make brass caps that will keep them from leaking if the valve dont hold after you fill them.. Check ebay i use them with no leaks. But i dont store them in my camper either..

They sell a lot of crap, especially from China, that's either dangerous to use or outright illegal for sale. The distributors don't care because customs almost never catches it and they are usually virtual companies that will fold when they get sued due to an accident. Amazon even has a reporting mechanism to report 'not legal for sale' items.

Every 1lb cylinder I've ever bought says 'illegal to refill' on the label. The three I can lay my hands on have the labels in the attached images. The two skinny ones are standard propane torch cylinders but lest you think that because I'm in nanny-state Canada that there is no such thing in the U.S., the shorty is a Coleman cylinder that quotes the U.S. code regulation outlining the severe penalties for transporting a refilled cylinder (I guess since the founding fathers didn't prohibit stupidity on private property, only the D.O.T. can make illegal to be stupid on the roads).

But go ahead... even the OP admits he was a gnats-whisker from blowing up his camper doing it. Unfortunately, you probably would no longer be eligible for a Darwin award.

We get the 1 lb. bottles at Sam's for about $2.99 each. At that price there is NO way in HADES I'm taking a chance on refilling them. The ones we buy are Worthington brand and they plainly state "DO NOT REFILL".

I'd had to have one blow up in or near my RV and have our insurance deny the claim if they find out we were using refilled 1 lb. bottles when a new one is only $2.99.

Ain't worth it folks.

Just

ain't

worth

it

I'm about to buy a 5 lb. tank for our Grill 2 Go. Maybe a 10 lb. pancake type tank.

Amazon's disclaimer as to the legality regarding the sale of certain items.

i.e. Amazon selling them doesn't mean it's a legal product. Buy at your own risk.

I repeat: at $2.99 a can, it's NOT WORTH IT, IMO. YMMV

I don't even like carrying those small cans around. That's why I'm looking for a bigger (legally refillable) TANK with an adapter for our grill.

Reading the label's small print confirmed my paranoia about even exposing them to sunlight.

Its not so much the cost of new vs refill as it is disposing of all those empty cylinders. You can buy those refill adapters at Walmart, Lowes, just about any hardware store, a lot of Rv dealers etc. I suspect if it was that big of a problem there would be lawsuits galore and no one would sell them. I cant recall ever hearing of one blowing up. I leak check mine when I'm done. Its also illegal to speed and text and drive but that doesn't prevent a lot of people from doing it.

I bought myself an adapter and hose at Cabellas a long time ago. I can hook my propane stove up to my propane tank on the trailer and eliminate the need for those little bottles. I still carry a few and use them off an on but I'm not dependent on them.
