breezeway vent covers are attacked to sealant

Has anyone dealt with having their vent covers stuck to the lap sealant around there breezway fan? I wanted to remove them and inspect the sealant but it seems they are a part of the sealant. I'm guessing the builders were in a hurry and didn't let it dry first. There are cotter pins that are supposed to be used to hold down the covers. Has anyone successfully removed they covers in this type of situation?
Thanks
