Does rust hurt rubber roofs?

Does rust hurt modern day "rubber" roofs? I know it can stain them but can it degrade the roof so badly it leaks?

I'm installing a cell phone range extender on my 8315BSS. To do this I have to mount an antenna on the roof. The antenna has to be mounted on a metal plate. The plate is galvanized steel, 6x8 inches, and has to be secured flat on the roof. I plan to secure it with a couple of screws and lots of caulk

My local RV technican says the plate will rust and the rust will degrade the roof covering so badly it will start leaking. I have heard of rust staining a roof but never causing leaks. Besides this plate is galvanized. But, the technican is adament.

Has anyone seen or experienced this kind of leak?
