How to check for leaks on roof

I just purchased a 2013 used 21as and wanted to ask you how do I check for leaks on the roof.

Welcome to the forum its a great place to get your questions answered. First check the inside ceiling for signs of leaking like stains around vents and openings if no stains you are more then likely good.

The absolute best way is to have the unit pressurized.
There are places that do this. They blow air into the sealed rig and look for places where it escapes.

On your hands and knees on the roof. Look for cracks in calking and sealing tape. Even the smallest of cracks can leak.

I checked my trailer in April last year and then again in June and found a roof leak from a small crack in the dicor around the roof vent. Fortunately found it before it did serious damage, but finding the point of entry took some doing. Best advice I can offer is check your roof often. If it's leaking you will most likely know. Check all obvious areas.

Take it into a truck wash and get inside during the operation. Take a towel and some soap just in case. No need to waste the effort.

Don’t wait for it to show up on the ceiling!
The air pressure idea is another silly idea. Want to see a rubber roof membrane, balloon up off the roof?
As mentioned, get on the roof on your hands and knees and look for any tiny crack, anywhere.
If you want insurance against leaks, buy enough, Eternabond tape to cover all seams. Clean all surfaces well first. Your set.

Send a message via MSN to Tiggerdad
You must not only check every seam, crack and caulking but you must check every square inch of the roofing material.

In reality it’s more accurate and far simpler to locate a bunch of soap bubbles streaming from a seam, pipe penetration, or gasketed fitting ie clearance light or vent. You’ll never sight them all via visual. It’s not silly, more professional and efficient. Use about 3” H2O water pressure from a fan and pressure the cabin. When ready spray all possible openings.

The amount of air pressure they use for this test is about the same as what is put out by your furnace blower. If it ballooned up your EPDM roof just think what the roof was doing while driving down the road at 60 MPH.

I did some roof work almost 30 months ago... not to fix a leak, but to prevent a leak from happening... preventive maintenance...

I just did a roof inspection a couple of weeks ago and all looks good. I also went thru two huge rains while camping in FL for 3 weeks recently and can say for certainty there are no leaks in my roof.

Read below to see what I did. There are many discussions on this board on Eternabond
