I broke both sewer vent caps

Are they really necessary? cause looks like I will have to remove the whole cap assembly down to the roof which looks like a lot of mess and work.. what is the job of the caps?

Kinda like the water heater or roof vent caps on your house.

Or our fireplace/chimney cap here at home.
