Quick question about roof vents. Manual crank style.

WOW. Great forum. Tons of information. Glad I found y'all. I have a quick question about the roof vent for my 2003 Sunseeker Forest River LE 2100. I took a quick look and didn't see where this had been asked before (although I am sure it has been) ..... but I was hoping to save myself 2 days of forum browsing and see if anyone can just help me out real quick. Thanks in advance.

In the bathroom in rear of the camper, there is a manually cranked open/closed vent over the fan with a plastic cap on the roof. The cap has disintegrated and blown off. Anyone know where I can find a replacement? Part number? Can I replace just the plastic cap or does the entire assembly need replaced?

Camping World has just the caps with the manual crank for about $20. I just replaced the entire thing on my '87 enclosed car trailer for about $45 for the assembly and another $15 for the sealant and dicor. Depends on the status of the entire thing.

Thank you folks so much. Took me longer to take the pictures and type the question than it did to get solid, helpful answers. Life is good. THANKS again.

Those vent caps deteriorate over time due to sun and the elements. On our last rig, we had to replace one and called an RV store when we were out of state. All they needed was the old cap so they could match the particular type of hinge that was on the cap. I took off the old cap, took it to them and they had me a match in seconds. I don't remember the cost, but it was probably $30.00 or less.

Again, thank you all so much. I ordered this one: One-piece Vent - White - Heng's Industries 71311-C1G2 - Vents - Camping World

I'm pretty sure I can make it work. I will report back after installation and hopefully it can help someone else down the road.

I will second the suggestion for a maxxair vent cover...just installed a couple myself....very easy to do and it will protect the other cover and prevent the sun from beating it up, will protect it from stormy weather, hail, etc...and best of all will allow you to leave that vent open and not worry about rain coming in. Greatly increases ventilation. Only thing is, judging by where you have it parked you may no longer have the clearance to park it there once a Maxxair is installed....loks awfully tight.

X3 on the MaxxAir! Took longer to gather the tools, climb up the ladder, climb down the ladder and put the tools away than it did to install the vent cover!

I would agree there these are worth the money and you can get the camco ones for around $20

Youtube has some great video's for installing the vents and the Max air vents as well as a lot of RV repairs. Good stuff on there.

sdkammeyer,

Welcome to the forum! I like that rig! From appearances it's been well cared for.

See folks, why I *love* promoting this wonderful place? A new member comes in with a problem/question and look how many folks quickly jumped in to help.

It's a veritable Forest River Brain Trust I'm tellin' ya!

Thanks Weezer, and thanks again everybody!!

The part came in today, and since there's no time like the present, I hauled a bucket of tools up on the roof and got the job done.

For the "next guy" who has the same problem, let me answer my own original questions NO, there is not simply a snap on plastic cover to replace the one that fell apart Since its riveted to the metal frame that cranks up and down, the entire unit needs to be replaced. Nothing is simple these days....... but this job wasn't too bad. Of course I am a DIY kinda guy, and save a penny whenever possible, so I ordered the vent only, without the fan. The fan would have cost me an extra $50. (crazy right?) So with a little ingenuity, and some muscle, I was able to crack the spot welds on the old setup, and move the fan over to the new gig. Only had to drill a couple holes and do a little re-wiring. Definitely worth the extra 30 minutes of labor to save me $50 on the parts bill.

As far as the Maxx air .... dang those things look awesome BUT, unfortunately I cannot have one. The barn where she resides when not in use only gives me a couple spare inches of clearance as it is. (That's with everything closed up and cranked down).... so I had to skip it. Good thing I checked clearance before ordering and installing, or this post might not have such a positive attitude

Thanks again for all the help. If anyone has any questions now, or down the road, I would be more than happy to help out!!

The first picture here is the old vent on the left, with the missing plastic cover, after I stripped the fan off of it. And the new one is on the right, half way through fan installation.

Just finished replacing my vent cover. The replacement cover cost me $18.00 for parts and about 30 minutes of my time. Have to say thanks to "YOUTUBE" for directions.
