Re-caulking roof, remove old first??

I have an 07 Surveyor. All of the vents in the roof have a very thick, wide band of caulking (there when I bought it). This had split along vents. I'm going to recaulk, but was curious, do I try to peel off that black stuff first, or just caulk on top of it? Thanks!

I just caulk on top of the old, making sure I fill all of the little cracks.

Area to be caulked should be cleaned real good before caulking, caulk don't stick or seal well if the area isn't clean. I use simple green first then I go over it with alcohol / water 50 /50 and a final rinse of plane water. Let it dry real good then caulk away.

Clean with alcohol (denatured) really well and cover with the self leveling roof caulking.

when I first saw the picture, the work clean came to my mind first as well .
Use self leveling calk right over the top of the old. Not sure why, but no one says to clean off the old. I assume it seaps into the cracks of the old and creates a new seal. Maybe it's just a waste of time or maybe it's just impossible to remove the old. Just relaying what I've heard. As a side note, Use LAP sealant to reseal around doors and windows.

Some people will apply eternabond tape over new seals to help them last longer. Guess you can never be too careful.

I've read such contradicting reports on "cleaning" the rubber roofing (I understand you're referring to the caulk specifically) but man, it's so nasty to look up there!! Might have to give it a light scrub-down in the spring!
