Step rugs or no?

thought these seemed like a good idea for anti-slip and to keep a little more dirt out. A coworker said they will retain moisture and accelerate rusting. Any thoughts?

I like the rugs my self. Either buy them with the rubber backing or just buy some indoor /outdoor carpet, cut it to fit and glue it down. Helps more with dirt then a plain step.

We just added Camco step carpets prior to our last trip. Attach with spring clips. Even with the outside carpet and welcome mat, the step carpets helped keep more dirt out.


The primary reason we got them was for our dogs. Neither one liked going up the steps and another thread pointed out how dogs can get their nails caught in the step drain holes. For whatever reason, I no longer have to help the dogs enter the camper; they just run up the steps.

Many years ago our dog went down the stairs. Caught one of his nails in a drain hole. The outer part of the nail came off exposing nerves etc. We were boondocking and had to find a Vet. We did, the nail was cut off and the next day we headed out west. The dog had to have medication put on the nail and then a plastic bag placed over the foot to keep the nail clean and dry, every day. Not a whole lot of fun. So getting those holes covered up is a good idea if you own a dog that uses the stairs..

Some if not most steps have slots or holes in them, if you have pets, use a step rug, pets can get their paws/nails stuck in those and it can be very ugly. If rusting is a concern, remove them on occasion and dry them out

I have used carpet on the steps for years and never had a rust problem; however, I store my TT in a garage and it is not exposed to the weather most of the time.

Any ways we have just one on the bottom step steps have no holes in the top to rip the pups toe nails off so for now one is enough.

I have not noticed any undue rusting.

We use the rugs for several reasons mentioned, pets, dirt, etc and haven't experienced any rust issue on previous RV's. And a quick pass with some black Rust-Oleum® paint will handle any rust the carpets might cause. Plus I've seen plenty of rusty steps without rugs...

As has been mentioned...We bought them strictly for the dogs. It makes a world of difference for them to go up and down the steps without getting their nails caught.

You could just teach the dogs to wipe their paws on the mats before climbing the steps.

Seriously though, The carpet will get wet if it gets rained on and when getting rinsed off. We are particular about tracking debris inside and will place an old towel on the steps if they are wet and also right inside the doorway. But the carpet will dry fairly quickly. About every other year, I'll take them off and clean the steps and add a coat of paint. But rust is very minimal and the steps will break before rust will ever be a problem.

You folks up north may have a issue with the road salt and may have to paint more often.

Have used the step rugs since the 70's, never had an issue. Originally got them for the dogs. When it's hot out, it's cooler on the feet for dogs and kids.

I like my steps better without rugs but if I camping with a pet I would have a different view.

we have used them on our trailers.
this trailer has 2 doors so we needs a second set of covers.
in Canada they were 2 X the price.
we also take them off in the winter and store them in the garage.

no rust issues at all.
