What is this material on my roof?
I have this black material on all four corners of my roof. It is somewhat soft and pliable but is starting to crack, so I need to seal it before I have water damage. Does anyone know what it is or what I can use to seal it up?

I have no idea what it is but it looks like roofing tar that has been applied by someone with no idea what they were doing.

Yes, it reminds me of Black Jack roofing tar. It came this way from the factory.

Once you find out what it is and how to remove it replace it with some Dicor self leveling lap sealant.
You should be able to pick that up at any RV parts seller, Home Depot or Lowes may sell it in your area.

It looks like it is black epdm lap sealant to me. Or polyurethane sealant, maybe even geocell proflex. Blackjack or roof cement would not still be pliable.

Looks to me like automotive butyl type sealant. Very sticky and stays playable.

Could I seal over it with Butyl Rubber Sealant? I can get that here locally and it comes in a standard tube like most caulks. I want to make sure what I use will adhere to it. I tried silicone caulk but it did not want to stick to it.

It didn't look this bad 2 years ago when it was new, but yes, this black putty was used on all 4 corners. Picture did not post correctly, it should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.

I agree w/ PenJoe, I would ask the factory what it is. I would suggest EternaBond. It sticks to just about everything and lasts forever. I agree, you need to do something before you get water damage.

Just get all that silicone off there before you attempt to stick anything else up there.
Silicone - BAAAAD sealant for RVs, especially on roofs.

May I suggest that if you HAVE tried silicone on the roof...you get rid of it entirely and scuff up the area where you had it with fine sandpaper. NOTHING will adhere to where silicone was.

Honestly I don't know. We use it in automotive applications for sealing Windows and AC cases but that is 2 smooth pieces of plastic or metal that it adheres to very well.

i would remove it carefully and then clean with a mineral spirits like product. make sure it is super clean and then use a lap sealant if it touches the rook or a window sealer if its on the metal.
Or both if they touch both areas.

I have no idea why they needed to use this material. I'm going to take your advice and remove this stuff and see what's going on under there and re-seal the corners. My plan is to eventually seal everything on the roof with eternabond tape but I'm not to that point yet.
Do you think butyl rubber sealant would work?

May have been the dealership that did it when they installed the rain spouts off the gutter rail. I didn't think to check with them but I will.

Etherbond tape will work but not forever. everything MUST super clean before replacing any sealant.
Remember your seals must be inspected at every 90 days and repaired replaced as required to keep the roof warranty in good standing. We do ours monthly at teh park and i wash and reseal teh roof spring and fall before winterizing. Many people say that's unnecessary until the y have a leak.
then they blame the manufacturer.
