A & E Awning

I had to replace my 21 foot a&e awning due to damage from a storm last year. I got a used awning from a friend of mine. The awning was the same size as the old one so install was easy. The only thing is the new awning doesn't wind up when storing it. Is there a way to wind the spring myself? I know the ends come off so can I remove one of the ends and wind the spring to get some tension on the spring? Thanks for your input.

The answer to the question is yes.

BUT, unless you know what you are doing, best to leave it to a pro. Many people have been injured by mishaps with awning springs and garage door springs.
