I start to retract it and it starts to roll in until it reaches the halfway point ish and it makes a grinding type noise then stops but will extend back out to fully open. I don't know the brand of the awning .

Is the material rolling up straight or to one side? If it is rolling to one side, it needs to be centered on the roller. When it stops, check that the arms are not in a bind.

My money is that the awning material has slid to one side due to wind flapping.
As it retracts, the awning arms are binding.

Extend the awning and using a ladder "flap" the awning material while pulling on it to slide the awning material back to line up with the "dirt line" on the roller.

When it rolls up perfectly straight (may take several tries), I pop riveted the awning material to the roller at each end to prevent it from happening again.

By chance is one of the support arms locked down with the thumb screws??

Maybe a dumb question on my part, but are the knobs loose on the support arms so they will slide together as the awning rolls up?

If these are tight it may prevent the arms from closing up, otherwise I'm not sure why it only closes halfway.

Anoither thing to check is, did someone put ma campfire stice in the awning channel, My DW has done this to me a few times as well. My guess is what Herk said, as this happened on my last 5er Manual Awning, it would not slose because it had moved on the roll.

Twigs or walking sticks layed in the upper channels can slide toward the hinge point while folding up. Youroo!!
