Awning fell open

While opening my awning for the first time (brand new), the awning got @2/3 of the way out and it just “fell” open! Almost like a free wheel. Upon investigation the metal sleeve that the awning rolls up on has come out of the motor. I cannot push the awning barrel back into the motor far enough to put the metal “C” clip in to hold it together... any secret tips you can give me??

I'm going to state the obvious and say contact the dealer to either come out to fix it since it cannot be moved that way or they can send a mobile RV shop to fix it under warranty.

The "freewheeling" part is what makes me think there is an internal disconnect between the drive mechanism and motor.

When it free wheeled I think the pole came out of the motor allowing it to fall all the way out... now can’t get the pole to slide all the way in to where the clip will slide down in the slot.

That is just sad. Others on the forum said you can call a mobile repair service but you need to get forest river to approve it first.

Send a message via AIM to B and B
Sounds like the dealer shame game! Take the money and run! Mobile tech after calling appropriate FR warranty division.

1, that's not an acceptable reply from the dealer. I'd be phoning them and (politely) calling B/S.

2, do you have any pictures of what you're fighting?

3, what is the make/model of your awning?

Let me guess....Camping World?

By the buy...extended warranty is for AFTER the manufacturers warranty has expired.

Agree with the others, call forest river and explain the problem and the dealers response. I’m not sure they’ll reimburse the mileage, if any, but I’m pretty sure they’ll authorize having a mobile service fix it. You pay up front and send in the bill for reimbursement. We’ve done that more than once and it worked well. And, I’d have have a talk with the owner/manager about it as well. If you get no satisfaction there (after all, there may be other warranty items come up) I’d make sure to give that dealership the appropriate PR and recommendation to anyone who asks.

I agree with everyone that what your dealer told you is absolutely terrible.
I hope you can let the appropriate people in charge know how inconsiderate whomever told you that was. You did say it was brand new.

Contact Forest River and explain your situation.
let them know what the dealer said.
There is a contact page for each division on their web site.

Lastly, if you really want to try to fix it yourself, post some photos of the issue and the make/model and we'll try to help the best we can.

Best of luck to you.

You can also contact the manufacture of the awning for assistance. Dometic sent me parts for other items I had problems with under warranty and I fixed them myself. There should be a manual provided for all items installed in your RV.

If this is brand new as you say, extended warranty has nothing to do with it.

Plus, if you cant roll the awning back up, the camper can not be moved. The dealer (or a mobile tech) needs to come to the trailer to fix it on FR's dime.
