Awning top rail pulling out!

Hi all! Has anyone had the top rail of the awning pull out from the trailer?! Is this an easy fix? It's a 2014 Wildcat Maxx 313RE. My main concern, other than the whole thing pulling out, is water getting in where the screws are pulling out. Thank you for any input!

Looks like the factory missed the studs... you will need to locate the studs and re attach with self tapers. Fill the old holes with dicor.

Thanks crunchman! How do you find the studs on these? Finger tap method or will a stud finder work?

If you have access to an infrared camera, you may be able to see the studs after pulling the awning off and let it sit in the sun for a few hours.

We had the same problem with our 2005 Cardinal 5th wheel and Dometic auto awning. Thing is that the mounts don't go into the metal studs, gust the gel coat wall. My shop used rubber expandable plugs which solved the problem.

A good old trick, fill the screw hole completely with toothpick soak in wood glue.
Wait a day and reinstall the screws.

No access to an infrared camera! Telstar, I was thinking along those lines of putting some kind of plug or anchor to screw into...or even the toothpick idea might work!

Use the next size larger and longer screw......and caulk, and drive screws in manually....then invest in a set of awning poles....

I would look to see if screw anchors might work !!!
Tooth picks or wooden matches & wood glue,,, are great for furniture repair !!!
LOL !!!

The big question I have:

Did the original screws miss the stud OR did they hit the stud, but were just pulled out? (I suspect just pulled out)

If they hit the stud but just pulled out for some reason, I would consider using a larger screw diameter and also do as other mentioned with filler wood (toothpicks)

ALSO, I would put in several more screws. It appears from the photo that the original; screw spacing was about 9-12 inches. I'd drill a smal pilot holed and put a screw every 3 inches for the first couple feet on both ends of the rail, this would be where the most stress would be (the ends vs the middle)

If the screws missed the rail, (I kind of doubt it) then I would find the stud and re-position the rail (move up or down a couple inches to hit the rail)

I think they just pulled out for some reason, trying to tighten them back up doesn't work...they aren't grabbing anything. They definitely need anchors or filler wood to tighten. I'll try a little bigger screw and add some extra screws near the ends, makes sense!

Since there are no studs, is it okay to use anchors with next size up screw? Or should I just try the screw without anchor? Don't mind overkill, just don't want it pulling out again! 😕

Anchors are fine...but. .they need to be inserted behind anything in front of 'em, so you might have to take more apart down the line...

Mine just did the same thing as the OP. I have a 2016 Shockwave 5th wheel, first time out with it last weekend and after rolling the awning up I noticed mine is pulled away from the side for about 3 feet with no signs of screws except for one on the end, Just caulking! I have been reading other forums and noticed alot of people recommending the rivets below with good reviews. I will order some and find out.
