If you carefully drilled a hole, so not to hit any wires or anything vital, through the arms couldn't you put a pin in to keep it from opening? Without going out and looking at mine I can't remember if this is possible.

Make sure and secure it somehow, so it can't open while going down the road, before you transport it for repairs since what normally holds it in probably isn't working either.
If a Dometic A&E awning:

Yep. the torsion spring (when working properly) will bog the motor.
Continuing to hold it down should pop the fuse as the motor overheats trying to overtighten the torsion spring.

The only way the OP's problem could occur, in my opinion, is for the pin that retains the torsion spring to be broken or missing (to allow the motor to continue to run - The wound spring would prevent it otherwise) AND the OP to have held the motor control switch to extend; not retract (extend will unwrap counter clockwise and continue wrapping counterclockwise; if he hit retract, the motor reverses and would have wrapped correctly even with a broken spring). Double failure

Locking the arms does not lock the roller. The motor is what holds/locks the roller. I also made another lock that doesn't require drilling/tapping the end cap, it slips into the sun screen slot.

Upon further diagnosis a lippert will in fact roll the other way if the button is continually pushed.
I in fact learned something new today .
I'm surprised there is no limit switch.
I stand corrected!

I started thinking about this a little more in depth never thought about the roller unfurling even if the arms didn't move. Guess I will be looking for a way to secure mine so the roll can't turn unless I release it.

Old coot has it. When I bought my RV the sales guy warned me that it was real easy to reverse roll in the awning. I would imagine once or so you might be fine but it will become a repair if left or done too often I wager.

Tried mine this afternoon. If I hold the extend button long enough it will in fact start rolling in.

What brand is it? If it is an A&E/Dometic or Carefree, you have a problem with the torsion spring.

If you are referring to the tab in #23, you have to make a threaded rod as shown in #17 to hook in the loop and under the mounting bracket on the wall.

I know this topic has received a lot of discussion, but our awning rolled up backwards and now I am thinking we have a problem. We are not traveling with it, but once we put it back out will it roll up again or do you think the spring dis-engaged? Really want to enjoy using the TT this holiday weekend, so if we need to get someone out there I would rather do it sooner than later. It is a power awning. Thank you for any suggestions.

Many power awnings will roll up the opposite way if you continue to hold the rocker switch too long going out. It will go all the way out and then roll back up the opposite direction on the roller coming back in.

To reverse it, watch the movement and simply push the switch accordingly and run the awning back out and stop when at the maximum extension and then use the other side of the switch to bring it back in, winding it on the roller tube correctly.

We have to watch ours to stop at the proper time and I even labeled the switch in/out cause the DW had a habit of just pushing the switch without looking and rolled it up incorrectly a few times.

Is there a problem or do I just need to not fully extend it?

Mine will do it as well. If I extend it out and it over centers and the flap flips over. When returning it will roll up wrong. Stop when the flap is straight down.
