Repair of Gash in Entry Door

Hello to All:

Just got back home from the last big camping trip of the year and dealt with very high winds up near Mackinaw City, Michigan.

At one point during the wind storm, I opened the door and before I could grab the latch to hold onto it in the wind, it slammed open against the trailer and there is now a small gash about one-inch long in the outside door panel.

What would be the best way to repair this? Would standard spackling work?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice!

sparkling is not for auto body repair you could use some type of Bondo and sand and paint.

Thanks, SeaDog, that makes sense. Not having any experience with this type of repair, spackling was my first thought. I have to believe there's a product (or three!) out there that will accomplish what I'm looking to fix.
