RV door

As soon as I click the handle on my coach door and let go the door flys open. You have to hold it all the way. I am afraid it is so fast it will spring the door. Is this normal? The coach was bought new in September and the door has always worked this way.

Well, we have no idea what type, make or model of RV you have since you don't have it listed in your profile.
That would help since door types differ between brands and models.

I'm guessing that is a Georgetown Motorhome?

You will get way better information form other like owners if you include all the pertinent information.

Tncanfan, ours came with the gas strut on the bottom and twice right after we got it the wind really slammed it open hard. We added a strap at the top that gets tight about an inch before the strut hits full extension. Simple, effective and doesn' interfere with the screen door. Will try to find a pic.

Change the gas strut to one with a lesser # rating than the one you currently have. They are readily available at any autos parts store and not expensive. I had the opposite problem, strut wasn’t strong enough to hold door open in a breeze, would always push door shut. Changed strut to one with a higher # rating. Very simple job.

Thanks, Gidyupgo. We had exactly the same problem. Your solution appears to be just what I was looking for. How do you have it fastened? Screws?
I'd also like to know what material you used for the strap? Web belt? Rubber? I'm just getting our 2014 Forester Class C in order for the season, and found the strut broken - for the third time.

to help identify your rig. In a problem like this, you might’ve been better to post your problem under the Georgetown forum because of the door design problem. Trailers and 5th wheels probably would not have the same design door.

Jan Gerstner, I used a cheap dog leash from Walmart. Finished length gets tight about an inch before the strut hits the end of it's stroke. (Even if the wind slams it open it protects the strut) Allow extra to fold the ends, cut to length and melted the ends to prevent fraying. Folded the ends for strength and superglued. Two screws through washers into the top of the door and two more through the door frame. It has held up well for 2 years so far.
