For our 10 day trips to the lake I have several of what we used to call "astro turf" rugs. When set up for 10 days, they work great on the gravel sites and keep a lot of dirt out of the camper. (Mind you, we always pray that on pack up day it's not raining. If it's raining, they are wet, nasty, heavy and have to be laid out to dry when we get home.) For trips when we will be moving a lot, we found that a couple of the woven mats from Walmart work great. Like others said, they are light weight and easy to handle. At our Walmart, they are $49.

This conversation reminded me of a TIP FROM OUR CAMPING WIVES...Our campsites at the lake are 75' from the water. After getting tired of the kids walking out of the lake and onto the rugs with their wet sandy feet, the girls made a trip to the dollar store and picked up several dish pans. They fill them with water and strategically place them around the outside perimeter of the rugs. Now, when folks come out of the water, they step in the pans to rinse off their feet prior to walking on the rugs. All you get are some wet footprints that dry quickly in the summer sun.

We have (2) 5' x 20' woven mats that I put grommets in to stake them down if needed. Stow them in the pvc tubes in front of the axles.

Had astro turf first. Works OK but holds all the sand and dirt and water. Your basement will catch all the dirt as it sifts thru during travel.

This weather needs to quit so I can work on the trailer!..I got mods piling up on me...got me sum those pvc last year!..still laying in shop..I dont like folding the woven mats back up because the creases never come out..(I have add, i have ocd, im just like that lol)..wirh those tubes you can just roll em right?..do they come out More flat than the origami like procedure I use now?

Speaking about how to hold them down, I use 10 x 3/8 inch lawn spikes with 3/8 inch fender washers.

They come out of the tubes just fine and roll out flat. Use 3/8" x 6" gutter spikes thru the grommets.

I been using the alum tent spikes...would be nicer to have a better head to pull em out...it will be in the upper 20s here for a bit though...far to cold to work on trailer by west texas standards.....so ill wait

How do you fasten the PVC under the camper? How large?

6 or 8 inch PVC pipe.
I think most use 6".

I was also wondering how it was being fastened.

Not sure if galvanized pipe strapping would work and with an 8' span how it gets supported in the middle.

Definitely a good option for storing the mat.
