Tilex/Bleach on underside of awning

I've read successfully results of some members using Tilex or Bleach on the underside of the awning to remove mildew stains. Some have posted that they spray it on and roll up the awning for 30 mins or so. The exterior/top side of my awning is a black color while the underside is white. Will rolling it up bleach or discolor the top side of the awning? Any help would be appreciated.

Go to the dollar store and get some Awesome Spray. That is the name. I did the rollup thing and then scrubbed with a brush and 99% of the stains came off. Works great. I would not use bleach.

Thank you for your response. I guess "Awesome" did not have any ill effects on the top side of the awning?

Not at all. I used it at a 5 parts water to 1 part cleaner. Used full strength on a few hard to clean spots.

X2 what Boso said. I've also been using Tilex/bleach on vinyl awnings for 10 years and never had a problem.

I'm not saying that Awesome won't clean them, I've just never used it for that.

As every vinyl marine shop warns against bleach on boats I don't use it. An article in this month BoatUS magazine on cleaning also suggests not using bleach. It will not hurt the vinyl but will degrade the threads at the seems.
There are many vinyl cleaners available along with mold/ mildew removal products available. I use the same I have used on my boats for over 55 years.

Did you spray on the bleach and roll up the awning? I did not get the results I was hoping for with the "awesome" at several different strengths. Looking to try bleach or Tilex next.

We had really good luck with Simple Green. Needed to really spiff up the old sob as it was for sale.

Sorry to hear that. Mine is almost perfectly white again. Wish I had pics. I will admit that I scrubbed the he!! out of the awning to clean it.

I just discovered Wet and Forget, love it, works great on my house siding also. They make a great product for showers also. Bought mine on Groupon.

Don't leave us hanging like that...please do tell what product you have been using for over 55 years.

I had been using a Star Bright marine product. About 2 years ago the detailer at the marina gave me a bottle of X-14 to try. It is in a blue quart bottle and costs less than $10.

Yeah, I just spray it on and roll up the awning for about 15 minutes.
Normally I use Clorox Cleanup in the green bottle, but have used half and half regular bleach and water.

I wouldn't wear clothes you care about while spraying the awning.

The awning on my old camper was all white, top and bottom. Hated that thing! Anyway, about 3 times per season we used Mr Clean Magic Erasers and they always worked great to remove mildew and other stains.

Before using the Magic Erasers, I did use bleach and it worked well, but more than once I damaged clothes after getting drips on them.

Ok. So here is an update on my awning. The "Awesome" did not work for us so I used what I used to clean up our pop up. The DW bought some "Mean Green Mildew Destroyer". You can get it a Dollar General. It does contain bleach. I used a sponge to apply on the stains. A lot of them disappeared right away but the stubborn ones were not that easy. After sponging the darker areas I rolled up the awning. Then I hosed down the side of the TT to make sure if any of that stuff got on any painted surfaces it was washed off right away. I waited about 30 minutes, unrolled the awning and almost all of the stains were gone. I rinsed off the awing with a hose, top and bottom. If you knew where the darker spots were you could still see a little of where they once were. Overall I am very happy with the results. I will update in about a month when we are able to get our TT out of storage and camp again.

I have always used bleach and Dawn dish soap. Spray it on the underside......roll it up and let it sit for about 30 minutes........open it up and hose it off..
