Window awning installation

I have a 2013 Columbus 5th wheel that I would like to install window awnings. I will be adding 2 six footers on the right slide. I would like to save the installation costs by doing it myself. I have a neighbor who mounted his, and he said that he did not worry about finding studs etc, to screw into to mount the tracks. He just predrilled a pilot hole in the side for each screw and after adding sealant to the hole screwed it in. He has not had any problem with the awnings coming loose. I have also read that rivits are used where there is no wood or metal stud. Has anybody done this or does anybody know how they mount them at the factory?
Thanks

We've got 4 large windows in the curb slide that I'd like to do that to, probably 2 windows per awning. I'm just too anal (afraid) about drilling into the sides. Sure looks easy to do. BTW I really miss that show.
