Hot wheel hubs
The last few trips, our wheel hub on one wheel on our 5th wheel RV, was extremely hot. This trip, just 15 miles, we could smell burning rubber and the hub was too hot to touch. We assume it may be a stuck brake pad. Any ides on this, and how do we fix it?

Well I would jack up the unit so the the tire in question is off the ground. Then try and turn the wheel by hand if the brake is sticking it will be very hard to impossible to turn easily. Listen while turning you should be able to hear only a slight dragging sound of the brakes if the brakes are adjusted properly.
If the cause of your problem is not determined by spinning the wheel remove the drum and look at the bearings and the overall condition of the brakes. There could be many other things going on. When you are done looking and have found the cause repack the bearings and replace the grease seal and put the drum and wheel back on the axle.

Stuck brake pad or bad bearings. I would get it checked and repaired before moving it again. Jack it up and spin the wheel it should be obvious what the issue is.

You didn't mention your make/model.
If a TT/5th wheel, you are going to need to have the wheel/hub pulled and checked.
While it 'could' be stuck brakes, it could be a bad wheel bearing and more.
You mention brake 'pad'. Did you have the brakes upgraded? Most TT/5th wheel do not come with pads but rather brake shoes.
If you are not familiar with mechanical things, get it to a reputable dealer quickly. If the hub is too hot to touch in 15 miles of movement, something catastrophic is about to happen with that hub!

DO NOT Move the Unit! Have a Mobile Repair come right There! You risk loosing the entire wheel assembly! I will repeat DO NOT Move! Youroo!!

I'm aware of the "No maintenance" rule at most campsites. But--IF this were my unit and I had a bottle jack with me (which I do) I would be jacking that wheel just off the ground and rotating it as described in other posts.

We jacked up our RV and the wheel spins freely, so it must be something else. Can research it more when we get home. I was calling them shoes, but yes, we do have brake pads. We have grease at home, so will try taking off the hubs and see if they need maintenance. If it is more than that, we will probably have to take it to the dealership (CW) - groan!!!!

Thanks for the reply, we did jack it up and the wheel spins freely, so on to plan B, though not sure what that is ,as we are not mechanically minded.

If it is out of warranty you can take it to any trailer repair shop does not have to be CW or an RV only place.
Good Luck.!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of taking the trailer to the dealer (unless it is under warranty) go to a brake/axle shop.

If it is overheating that much you stand to loose a lot more than just a wheel and bearing. It could easily catch fire and loose it all! At least have a fire extinguisher and lots of water readily available in your truck.
Let us know how it goes.

When jacked up if you grab the tire from the top and bottom do you have any play in and out or and grinding while spinning the wheel? Most likely a bearing issue.
