Slide out awning re-tension
Has anyone increased the tension on a slide out awning? Think I need to on our main slide.

Hard to believe that nobody has re-tensioned a slide out topper awning on this phorum.

In order to increase the tension you will have to remove the awning material then add a turn to the tension and reinstall awning mat. To stop the water from pooling in the awning we slide an air mattress under the awning. The air mattress does double duty, it stops the water from pooling and decreases the noise of the awning when it flaps in the wind.

Just have to remove the brackets on the slide and put another turn in each end. Even tho' the air mattress is a good idea, I don't want to have something else to store and also climb up a ladder to install it. Thanks for the good idea tho'.

You want to be careful removing the brackets. The awning is under tension and could rewind causing damage to you or the trailer. If I am not mistaken you have to remove the fabric in order to adjust tension on the rail.

Don't think so, just run the slide in, remove the bracket on the front end and put a turn in, re-install the bracket. About the same as adding tension to your oh garage door, except not as strong or dangerous.

Well, turns out to be quite easy, I just retracted the slide in to within 6" of the side, removed the one screw holding the roller bracket on the hex shaft, the 2 screws holding the hex shaft in the mounting bracket, pushed the hex shaft in to dis-engage the roller bracket while holding the bracket. Added 2 turns to the tension and re-installed. Took less than 20 minutes for both sides. Won't know if it helped or not until it rains again, but we'll see.

All good Intel! After watching some videos about TT options and service, I knew I wanted the slide awning to protect the seals. When I ordered the TT, I specifically requested the awning. I had no clue you could even adjust the tension on the awnings. Thanks so much!

I know I'm bumping an old post - but I just want to thank Old Coot for posting this. It help me a lot in figuring out how to set the tension on my slide topper, and described it here.
