What is this thing on my slideout for?
I have a 2018 Forrester Class C 2291SF
There is a piece of hardware attached to the top of my slideout just behind the awning.

Are you sure it's on the slide-out -- or just beside it?
It's an anti-unfurl gadget. There should be a lever on the topper spindle that would hang on this gadget should the topper try to unfurl while you're driving.

It's part of the anti-billow for the awning. If the awning tries to unroll as you are going down the road the little arm on the awning will hit that stop you have pictured.

The arm on the awning would do almost half a turn before hitting that, possibly the arm is in the wrong position, ti sticks straight out which will be a problem when I pout the cover on it.

it's a SLAP BLOCK for the 'finger' of the awning end, which will keep it from unfurling during travel.... if you are driving in high winds, chances are you'll hear a big BANG! every now and then if the wind is getting under the awning and trying to unfurl it. The 'finger' is the stop mechanism that hits the slap block on the sidewall.

Ok, I admit, I am a little slow to figure some things like this out. This post is interesting because I worry about the 2 electric awnings unrolling while traveling in our WJ. I have even had DH pull over just so I can run back and give them a tug.
So if that little thingy is too stop it unrolling, why doesn't it get in the way when we want it to unrolling? I am missing something. Is this just to stop the awning and not the arm?
If so, then, I will still be running back to check those awnings.

That object is for slideout toppers, not regular awnings.

Depends on how tall you are. I need to stand on an inverted milk crate just to unlock the vent flap for my range hood 
My son, on the other hand, can clean the top of the awning when rolled up without standing on anything. 6'4 and L-O-N-G arms.

I am not sure which units we are talking about,,, but good luck reaching the Awning Or Slide out toppers on our Little Sunseeker !!! Unless you are about 8' tall !!!
Speaking of tall,,, I used to be 6'2" Thanks to the Spine problems I now have,,,
I have lost 4",,, am now about 5'10" !!! I first noticed this when it became harder & harder to reach tools hanging on my peg board !!! SURPRISE - SURPRISE !!!

Good question. It doesn't get in the way because as the awning goes out it is far enough out of the way from the "stop block".

you've hit the nail on the head - this is also 'why' it's FINGER is not as close to the stop block as you'd think it should be - it has to be away far enough, otherwise it would hit the stop, rather than missing it, when extending the awning : )
this does give the awning a little 'play' when trying to unfurl in high winds, but it's not enough to damage anything.
we are very smart on this forum!

When our Sunseeker was new,,, one of the ones on a slid out covers broke when we opened the slid out !!! It had been installed wrong,,, Factory replaced it for us !!!

When you power out the slider, that "stopper" remains behind and out of the way. This prevents strong crosswinds from blowing up the canopy like a parachute. It's a big issue where we are when traveling across the open desert.
