5th wheel hitch

we have a silverado 2500hd 4wd cc std 6ft bed. looking at the silverback 31RK, we heard it has a good turning radius and thus does not require an auto-sliding hitch. so we are looking at a normal hitch. thoughts?

Not sure of brand names, but think the dealer uses curt hitches, is anyone familiar with this brand? thoughts?

thanks much again,

bill & jodi

I have a curt hitch and like it very much. Although most modern 5ers have a rounded nose for tight turning radius, the general consensus around here has been to at least have a slider installed even if you never use it.

I just bought a B&W today, they are installing Friday....everyone at RV shop recommended it for the 35QB4 we bought(I have a 3500 with 8.5 foot bed)....plus I get to keep the bed space when not using the camper...I think every region has it's favorite, seems like around here the Demsco is popular....At work the B&W......I am new to the 39' trailer pull that doesn't have a tractor or some equipment on it....

I will know Friday after I pull the thing home....lol...lol..

enjoy,

Curt is an excellent hitch but heavy. I have the Andersen Ultimate it's lighter, cheaper and I love it.

hmm ok, will see what dealer has on-hand but think it was only curt, will ask about others and take a look at a slider if they have one as he had mentioned I may need one. will see.. and also update here.

I have a Curt 20k hitch on my 2004 Dodge with a 6 1/2 foot bed pulling a 2013 Silverback 33rl and had it 90 degrees turned without a problem. I like the Curt alot.

So I take it your visit to the dealer went well this weekend. I am interested in the 31RK as well. Was there anything that you didn't like about the floorplan? I haven't been able to find one close enough to go look at as of yet.

I have a Curt w slider. Had it for 2011 36 ft triple slide and same on this 2015 Silverback 33rl. Great hitch. I never take mine out of the truck bed as I only use the Dodge 2500 w 6.7 Cummins turbo for getting the job done. The slide allows in the rare instance to turn on a dime. No regrets. It's been in my truck 3 years and x country in some incredible tight back ins. Never say never that you will not use a slider. That is the day you will need it. 😀

The answer to your question depends on what pin box is on the unit and the max weight you will be pulling. Also to be considered is the capability of the TV. So your seemingly simple question does not have a simple answer if safety is a consideration.
The ability to make a 90* turn is fine but doing so is never a good idea.

I also have a Curt 20K with slider in a Ram 2500 6.5' bed. Don't use it very often, but once I should have, have a nice little scar on the cab of the truck as a result. IMHO, a short bed truck needs a slide hitch sooner or later.

I never understood the marketing hype of 90 degree or 88 degree turning. Bad idea, and 99% chance you'll never do it, or want to do it. I only did it once, but I wanted Burger King bad, and I wanted THAT parking spot, so jackknifed it in there. Puts a bad strain on tires and axles. If careful, any hitch will do. We have the Reese Elite 18k, but would prefer the Trailer Saver air hitch over any on the market.

Check with the dealer but I think that model is standard with the Reese Revolution Kingpin. If so, you won't need a slider.

Negative. Cedar Creek and Silverback do not use the Reese Revolution. Only the Lippert 1621, Trail Air, or whatever else you may select.

I pull with short bed truck. I have a slider, but have never had to use it. But, I have it if the situation ever arises to need it.

Have a 6.5 bed and fixed hitch. Never needed a slider. Everyone I ever talked to with at least a 6.5 and a slider never used it.

thanks for info, just going back and forth with dealer's dept that will be doing the hitch install on my truck. they say they will not put one in unless auth by FR? due some freakish accident some customer had when they installed a non-sliding hitch.

and our walk-thru is scheduled for tomorrow so trying to wrap this up today so they can be ready for us tomorrow. will post updates on our walk-thru. really excited this is a good unit and floorplan.

Spoke with our local dealer today and he suggested the Curt Q16. A $200 upgrade over the basic Curt 16K, but worth the extra cash. He also said, with the newer 5th wheels, you won't need a slider with the 6.75 box so save your money.
