a/c ice chips coming out

we have a SB 31RK and tonight while the a/c was on and running, it started to make this wierd humming noise. as I checked it, I was getting some small ice chips coming out of the ac falling on me.

turned off a/c and opened filter did not see anything out of the ordinary, no ice buildup. turned on ac again and the slight noise followed by small ice chips coming out through vent side of ac.

the chips were very small and it wasn't like an all out fall-out but some random coming out of the vent of ac.

turned on fan and seemed good.

I have the ac filter open and ac is off. wondered if maybe just leave it a bit and see if the ice melts? don't know where that ice is but there is no water/ice falling down from ac since I left filter open.

any idea's? thank you in advance,

we are in fl and it is warm out tonight so not freezing.

Ice from AC explained

The information provided with the unit does not cover what you need to WATCH for to prevent icing. I had a local RV specialist give me a courtesy look, see, and it saved me money and provided a learning tool.

Here is the deal on my 2015 Silverback with dual a/c.

* Icing CAN occur when you have the AC units running all of the time without a lapse in the recycle time. To prevent this, make sure your "fan" is set on automatic.

* 2nd; start your AC by cycling DOWN to the first level of coolness that turns the AC on. Once you reach that level, let AC run until it cycles off. Once that level is reached drop another 3 to 4 degrees until AC recycles.
Keep going until you reach your desired coolness. Your unit will keep up and cycle itself on and off without icing. You will be and no wet carpets or fear of a major hidden issue.

* In hot climates, start your AC earlier in the day and allow it to keep cool with the build of external sun on the RV.

* IF you have dual air, run BOTH and do the same.

It works. Had icing last summer on 3 occasions until I followed these simple rules. No more issues even in very hot weather. We leave a pet in the RV during trips and it is critical our AC's continue to function properly.

The Dometic AC units are NOT built the same as your home AC. How could they? These are typically some variation build of the old style window AC units with a different air flow design.

Good luck. When all else fails:

We had that problem this last year, blowing Ice all over the bed and bedroom. Gave my wife the perfect opportunity to say "see I told you it was too cold in here".

All I could do in my defense was to reply with that deer in the headlights look. Then she gave me that wife look and just like any smart deer, I ran off very fast.
