Anyone towing a Silverback 33RL with a RAM 2500 6.7L Cummins
We're considering a Silverback 33RL, love the floor plan.
We have a 2011 RAM HD2500, 6.7L Cummins, CC, Auto Tran, 4WD.
Enough truck?
Cheers

Plenty of engine, tranny, and brakes....might look at airbags to help with pin weight.
Tale the advertised pin weight and add 5-600 lbs for real "loaded" weight.

And compare this to the printed payload on the door style sticker. Not to forget the weight of you, DW, kids, dogs, coolers, hitch and the like you put into the truck when towing.

As an owner of a 2012 Ram 2500 you'll be over the door sticker payload when all said and done. However if you just use the RAWR then you'll be fine. With a dry weight around 10,415lbs and a pin weight of 2015 (brochure) and figuring around 1200lbs of stuff you're looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of 11,615lbs. Add maybe 300 to the brochure weight and your at 11,915lbs which is under your 2500 tow rating. However starting with the 2015lb dry pin weight (brochure) and add 150lbs for hitch and your at 2165lbs, and thats not figuring anything in the front cargo hold or bedroom. My guess is your going to be around 25-2600lbs on the pin. Well over your payload rating. Your RAWR is 6000lbs. Not sure what Ram model you have but my CC LB weighs in around 2750 on the rear axle empty. So 6000-2750 is 3250lbs. 3250lbs - 2600lbs leaves you with 650lbs under your RAWR. You may or may not know that the 2500 and 3500 Rams all share the same frame, brakes and front suspension parts. The only difference between the 2500-3500 is rear springs. IMO you could add airbags or Timbrens and get the same payload capacity of a 3500. Won't legally change the trucks rating but will physicaly.

Thanks for the replies.
goduc, I came up with same analysis as you. Over our payload sticker (2092) and GVWR (9600) but under the RAWR (6010). I plan on installing Firestone airbags... theoretically giving us the equivalent capacities of a 3500.
It's interesting how much opinions vary on tow capacity. It seems if everyone adhered to the payload "sticker" we would only see Medium Duty trucks towing Full Profile 5th wheels.

Pin weight seems like you are in 1 ton area.
Also most on most trucks you will carry some of the 5er hitch pin forward of the rear axle, so you will also have increased weight on the front axle.
In my opinion it seems that a lot of people use airbags to justify an overload situation. If your truck squats enough to use your headlight for coon hunting- you have too much weight in it. Most 3/4 tons shouldn't squat more than about 3-4" if loaded with in their limits, and factory rake is usually about that 2-4".

I say buy some firestone air bags part #MC2299 for your truck. I had the same year ram, I traded it in on a 2012 Ram 3500 mega used the same air bags on this truck, those airbags take about 1hr to hook up if you know what your doing.....if you have any questions about them let me know I'll be glad to help.....

"Brakes"
Regardless of the engine, transmission, or springs- I care most about stopping. Overloading the TV beyond its sticker rating is inviting problems.
Get it weighed at a scale and make sure you`re within the design limits specified on your vehicle's sticker.

Same brakes as the 3500. Everything except rear springs is the same on a 2500 as a 3500. If a 3500 can stop it then a 2500 will also.

I had a 2011 ram 2500 Crew Cab 4x4, now I have a 2012 3500 Mega Cab 4x4, I pull the same trailer different truck and both trucks stopped the trailer the same way....The only difference a Ram 2500 and 3500 is the leaf spring set up on them, makeing the payload higher on a 3500, same brakes, front and rear axle, frame......I did a crap ton of research to learn this...two reasons I went with a 3500 Mega over a 2500 mega....1st. 3500 had 4:10 gearing....2nd I liked the color more.....didnt spend any more money because its a 3500......

I just bought a 2011 Ram 2500 CC CTD 4x4. I do not expect any problems pulling my 2011 Silverback 29RE. I have pulled over a year with a 96 F250 7.3 2WD, never had any problems going or stopping! The Ford only squatted 1-1/2" with everything fully loaded for a week of dry camping at The Rally last June in Louisville. I do not expect the Ram to be any different in the squat. I do expect the Ram to run like a greyhound given the extra horsepower and torque. Went from 235 HP to 350 HP, from 525 torque to 800 torque.
My only concern is bed height. I probably had about 8 inches of clearance with the 2WD ford. This 4x4 Ram is considerably higher at the bed. I do not want to run down the road with my nose in the air, so it will be interesting to see if I can get the needed truck to nose clearance without being stuck up.
