Battery hookup

I took a picture of battery hookup before taking batteries out last fall. Hooked it up this year I thought like the picture. I have 2 red(positive) and 2 black(negatives) and 2 18" red and black cables with rings on each end. I hooked red positives from trailer one to each battery and one black to each battery.. I hooked the 18" red cable to each positive. Left over is 18" black cable. Diagram on side of panel shows only 1 red cable to battery and jumper red cable to other battery. What is correct? I put in new batteries this year cause last years wouldn't charge up. Maybe dealer had it wrong? Took batteries out because previous used disconnect switch didn't shut all power off and had dead batteries in the spring.

Sorry for long post and thanks for any help. Don

Do you have (2) 12V batteries or (2) 6V batteries. It will make a difference in how you wire them up together.

2 Interstate 24DC 12 volt batteries. Always hooked to city power so these are backup.

So both reds to postive + on battery 1 and both blacks to negative - on battery 2. And use jumpers to connect reds and blacks to corresponding terminals of 2 batteries. Would that be right? Parallel connections.

Yes but they also power your emergency trailer brakes.

I have 2 red cables coming down from trailer and 2 black cables. Your diagram just shows 1 red and 1 black.

Yes, that's fine.

do you have an inverter for a residential refrigerator? it may have its own set of cables. and there may be even more as it is common for many devices to be wired directly to the batteries.

go back to that diagram that 5picker supplied. while it only shows single cables being connected to the batteries you want to connect any other cables you have to the same terminal as the single cables shown in the diagram. (i am excluding the jumpers). so all positive cables connect to the positive terminal of one battery and all negative cables connect to the negative terminal of the other battery. the jumpers connect the two positive terminals and the two negative terminals.

I placed color electrical tape near the terminals on the surface of the batteries and wrapped the corresponding cable with the same color electrical tape.
No more confusion which cable goes where.
