Thinking about it, yes it would be the same.

So then back to my other question, does anyone have any idea of the turning degree of a TT? I'm a visual person.

Thanks

I have a 2500 Dodge. Crew cab 6.5 short box with no slider. When I picked up my silverback I had the dealer jacknife it while I watched. I had 1/2" clearance at 92 degrees.I drove truck for 43 yrs. And I don't back up more than 45 deg. If needed use more pullups.

Does anyone who has a Hathaway and a short bed truck with no slider, have pictures of them backing in at max degree?

Thanks for all the input and opinions. I like this site.

As I have stated earlier, you have two choices either buy a slider hitch and not dent or break a rear window! Or buy a static hitch and hit the cab and break a rear window some time in the future.

I am towing a 34RL Hathaway edition Cedar Creek with a short bed Ram Mega Cab truck. The only time I use the slider hitch is backing into a camp site or my drive way, I don't have to worry about hitting the cab. I have a low cost Reese sliding hitch no need for an expensive slider hitch, I activate the hitch to allow it to slide and I am good to go.

I agree with Jim. I went back to read your original post and I assume you already have the Curt 24 5th wheel hitch? I can understand not wanting to buy a new hitch but the first time you bust out your rear window it will have more than paid for itself. Another option is change your Kingpin to a Sidewinder. I'm not sure if they work with a Curt hitch but if they do you can spend ~$700 for a manual slider (Reese 16K) or couple hundred more for a Sidewinder. I have the Reese 16K manual slider and wish I had the Sidewinder. It's not if, it's when..

Thanks all for you opinions and suggestions.

Looks like a slider or sidewinder is in future before I get the trailer.

Need to budget for it now.

Have you tested that? I have intentionally backed until I could back no more before I hit. I can't do more than May 75-80 degrees... might want to do a test..

X2. You can get by with even a flat nose 5er and a short bed with a standard hitch. I did it for years. But do you want to have to worry and watch all the time? I tired of it and went to the sidewinder. Huge relief! Now when backing into those tight spots I can concentrate on that instead of the distance between the truck and the nose of the 5er

X several. Have dents to prove it.

Yes just to get in my driveway I have to almost go 90 degrees with no issue

OK, good but almost is only good in horseshoes and hand grenades.. I guess what I'm saying is all Silverbacks and short bed truck situations are the same and I can't get even to "almost" 90 degrees. You also have to take into account the angle your RV is to your TV in certain situations.. hope you continue to have no issues..

My plan is to upgrade to. A Sidewinder...NMWildcat has convinced me..

If you have a newer truck the back of the pinbox will hit the side rail of the pickup box long before you will have a problem hitting the back window. The sides of the newer trucks are so darn high it really limits your turning ability. I've had a newer Ram and now a Chevy both have the same problem. Pinbox is adjusted up as much as it will go.

I just saw a video where if in doubt take a ruler and measure from center of kingpin out to the corners, then go to truck and measure from center of hitch to back of truck cab and see what your clearence is.

Can you post a link to the video?

Ok what don't you know about turning geometry with a 5th wheel and a short bed truck?
I will guarantee that you will in some time hit the cab and possibly break a window if you do not have a sliding hitch when backing up in a campground or in your driveway! The truck and trailer are never on the same plane when backing up either the site has a curb or is slightly uneven. This will skew the trailer inwards and the closing point of the trailer and Cab are actually closer than you think. You are very rarely on a level surface when you are in a campground, either the road has a crown or there is a curb that you need to go over.
As far as Silverback's having a sculpture corner that is no different than a Cougar and the 88Deg corners that they have. I still hit my corner of the cab with the Cougar very very slightly when I did not extend the hitch in a parking lot trying to maneuver around a curb and tree.

Either buy a long bed truck or buy a slider hitch, end of story!

Or don't buy either and get a sidewinder pin box. Better solution!
