Grey Tanks

We are on our maiden voyage of our 2016 36CKTS.

It has 2 grey tanks one for the Galley and a separate one for the bath/shower with each tank being 40 gallons. I am trying to balance the 2 tanks together because the bath tank due to the shower fills much faster than the galley tank. I have done this before on a previous trailer w/o issue.

I put a gate valve at the sewer hose connection and closed it, then opened both grey tank valves in the water bay and to my surprise nothing happened. The bath tank stayed the same (full) as did the galley (1/3 full). Both tanks drain fine when opened individually.

The only thing I can think of is a back flow preventer installed in line. Does anyone know why I can't balance the 2 grey tanks?

Why didn't you open both tank valves before filling tanks, just curious.
Btw I wouldn't rely heavily on the accuracy of your tank moniters.

Not any particular reason, we only open valves when tanks are full. Some years ago we had the grey tank open and got some pretty bad sewer gas from the park.

I did however try it;

Both tanks completely empty, open both grey valves and closed the gate valve I put on at the sewer hose connection. Ran the shower for a few minutes and checked the tank levels, Galley showed empty and bath showed 2 lights (1/3) full.

Thing is we like state parks and most don't have sewer hookups and having a total of 80 gallons of grey would allow us to stay a few days longer.

The tanks are on different levels. They won't fill equally when co-joined.

Sterling silver,
Thanks for the reply. This is my first 5th wheel. Still learning.

How long did you leave the valves open? I think it might of been trapped air as they are both vented to the same place. I know that it sounds weird but when I am emptying my grey tanks they drain slow if both valves are open for some reason. Mine balance eventualy.

I have a 34 so not sure if the tanks are in the same place though and if they are like Sterlingsilver says he may be right.

Hmm, that's interesting. I'm assuming the bath tank is the lower of the 2 tanks.

We just moved today to Amarillo to Teal hunt for the weekend with some old friends so the tanks are empty now. I'll try an experiment in a few days.

I took the factory tour at the recent FROG rally. While walking past the frame with the tanks installed, seems to me that all the tanks are at the same level. I may be wrong, but there is only so much room between the flooring and the underbelly for the tanks.
