Height of camper & overpasses

Hi all! We had just purchased a 36CKTS. Love it! It states that our trailer is 12'11 in height. My hubbie put the MAX AIR vent covers on the roof. He measured the trailer with the covers on and he got 13'8 on the highest one. My question is how tall are these overpass bridges? How tall is your rig? Should we just take the vent covers off? We live in Jersey. Thanks!

Rule ONE, watch for signs. We are 12' 6" and our rule to nothing less than 13' 6" giving us one foot for any bounce etc. Knowing you height is very important but don't think you will ever have a problem on interstates, if a 18 wheeler fits, so will we. Just be careful and next time at truck stop get a truckers atlas, it will show almost every low clearance bridge except maybe in small towns.

Just be careful of gas stations overhangs and don't even think drive thru at McDonalds.

Most places. Max "legal" height is 13'6" anything over that is considered over sized load. You will fit on most major roads, but be very careful on secondary roads.

Also bridge clearance signs are usually not 100% accurate. They may be off one way or another due to road resurfacing etc.

A complicated question. I have the penguin A/C in the bdrm so that is the highest point. I have a max air on the bath fan and it is lower than the A/C. I had the height measured and it is 13'4". With that said, I use a truckers type GPS that allows programming your height ( I use 13' 8"), length and weight. It keeps me away from low overpasses, off rickety bridges and clear of hairpin turns.

Each state has a statutory bridge height. So one could say; If there is no sign and the statutory height for the state is 13'6" you will clear it. Anything lower will have signs posted. Note: This only applies to municipal roadways. So you might want to make it a habit to pay attention to those previously unused signs.

Jersey has about 24 bridges that will ruin your day. Go here to find them and more... http://www.aitaonline.com/Info/Low%2...w%20Clearances

Here's a link to low clearances by state. Low Clearances I noticed New Jersey has two low clearances on I-80.

Thanks for the link. That's good information to have. What brand and model GPS do you use? We've been considering one and yours sounds like the ticket. What was the cost, if you don't mind me asking?

In addition to Duckogram's good info, (we both have the 36CKTS with the second A/C) I use multiple sources to keep my rig out of harms way. The Magellan Roadmate RV9165T-LM allows me to program rig height, length & width. With lifetime updates it hopefully will keep us safe. Planning is key. I use aitaonline plus an iPhone app called Allstays Camp & RV which has filters that once set, will display all low clearances along and close to your intended route. I back all this up with my Rand McNally Motor Carrier Atlas that has a section with low clearances for each state.

Travel safe & enjoy the ride!

I have the Rand McNally 7710 RVND. The new 7720 is out. I would get the Magellan or the Garmin when mine goes bad. My 7" screen is great but not bright enough for daylight and it fries 12v charger cords. I have also found Rand to be non-responsive and non-supportive of their products. I paid about $275. on Amazon a year or so ago when they first came out. The Rand has good maps and its fairly good at finding obscure campgrounds.

Another good source when available... Google Maps - Street View

I will run down the back streets that we are going to be traveling where possible on Street View and get a first hand perspective of the route.

This works well about 70% of the time for finding low obstacles and road surfaces.

For driving we use an Android Tablet with CoPilot software.

I make a sticker that shows my trailer height and I keep it on the back side of my visor

I carry a Garmin Nuvi 365LMT truckers GPS. It has lifetime updates for road changes/closures etc plus traffic updates which helps. My trailer is also very tall. It measures 13.6" at the top of the bedroom A/C. My eyes are to the skies when traveling and the weird thing is I'm finding myself eyeing overpasses now even when unhooked. It's sorta a good paranoia I guess. Good luck and have fun!

There are several 13' 6" clearances on major highways in Texas.
