New water heater

I just had a new water heater installed at CW, took home, later turned on water and i can't seem to get any hot water. The switch was off on heater. Turned that on, still unable get hot water, turned on gas and still same as elec., am i missing something? Or did i get a faulty heater? Tks

I'm thinking bypass valves as well. Did you pull the T&P valve open to make sure the tank was full of water?

The FIRST thing you should do at this point is pressurize the system with either the pump or by hooking to city water. NEXT, open the WH outside access door and GENTLY open the pop-off valve lever to be 100% certain there is water in the tank and it is full.

If you have no water immediately upon opening the pop-off, chances are the bypass valves are in the bypass position. Unfortunately, if they were in bypass, that also means you've probably fried the electric heating element since you've indicated you turned on the electric switch. (assuming you ALSO turned on the inside electrical switch if so equipped - BOTH have to be on in a two switch setup)

Now... if you have water at the pop-off upon opening, (and the bypass valves were in the correct position) I would then make sure the electrical breaker has not tripped for some unforeseen reason. Short of CW burning out the element by turning it on without water or not hooking up the electrical connections properly, the only other reason would be a factory defective element. (which CW SHOULD have checked by testing the system before you picked it up) You'll either need to return to CW for repair or replace the element on your own.

Once all those other things are checked, the last step is to fire up the propane side of the heater. After turning on the propane source and the propane ignition switch, go back out to the outside access door of the WH and see if it lights on propane. If it does, and stays lit, you should have hot water in a few minutes. If it doesn't light, return directly to CW and demand they repair.

I did the pop off valve and water did come out, and now I have warm water, but not hot water. I can hold my hand under the water without burning.

I also turned on the gas part of the heater, turning on the switch at the command board, at first the dsi/fl light led came on and then went out. but now when I turn on the gas switch, the dsi led does not come on? does that mean that the water is already hot?

also when I turned on the gas switch inside, I went outside to look at the heater and did not see any fire? am I supposed to see it? or do I have to manually light it?

but still in electric mode, I would think the water would get hot, it is warmer than when I first tried it.

When you checked for water at the pop-off was it hot or just warm?
***USE EXTREME CAUTION*** when checking the temperature this way.
If the WH is actually up to temperature, the water will be VERY HOT!!!!!!

IF the WH is up to temp, it probably won't light when you turn on the switch and the dsi-lockout indicator won't come on either.

Did you check the position of the bypass valves?
It's possible you are mixing more cold into the hot water line by the valves not being in the correct orientation.

How long has the electric to the WH been on? Mine takes a good 45-50 minutes to heat to full temperature when on electric.

Your water heater bypass valves should look something similar to this for normal operation.


If your center valve is in the on position like in the photo below, you'll be mixing in more cold water than hot and have the scenario you are describing. It needs to be off.

I would guess with almost certainty then your center bypass valve is in the incorrect position.

Calling cw see if they changed bypass valve, mine does not look like diagram.

Does it look like the one below? (a photo of yours would really help)
If so, the valve is in the correct position in the photo for normal operation but this particular style WH also has a built in check valve at the hot outlet. (built in-you can't see it) It is possible it is stuck or defective in some way.

FYI... the handle of the valve would turn a quarter turn and be parallel with the vertical pipe when in bypass.

Providing you are on a desktop/laptop computer...

Click "Go Advanced"
Scroll down to Additional Options, then to the "Manage Attachments" button and click it.
A new pop-up window will appear.
In the pop-up window click on "Choose File" button.

Click on the "Upload" button.
After upload is complete, click "close this window"
