Odor in living area

Ok I have a 2015 33IK. All of a sudden we noticed a holding tank type odor right inside the entrance door. I notice it starts when I turn on the vent in the bathroom. My first thought is the vent in the island was the culprit but had no smell under the sink.

The toilet has water in it so does not seem to be coming from there (and the odor is not even in the bathroom)

I turn off the fan the the odor goes away. I just dumped the tanks and it smelled before and after that

Not sure where to look next. Any ideas?

Could the vent fan be pulling smell from tank vent pipe on roof? Do you have both the bathroom and kitchen vent fan open? Try closing one and see if the smell goes away.

This typically happens when you leave one of your dump valves open or you need to deodorize your tanks by flushing with clean water

I fixed occasional similar odors by changing my plumbing vent caps on the room to the ones that power vent like the 360 siphon.

We have a 2016 33IK ad have been fighting a holding tank odor pretty much since we bought it. Same issue when any fan is on be it bathroom, fantastic or even the vent fan over the stove the holding tank smell comes in through the heater registers in the floor or out of the heater return vent.

I first replaced my vents to the siphon 360 which did not help at all even though I think that was a good mod. I’ve owned 2 other RV’s and several large boats with holding takes so I know how to use chemicals. My dealer said is was improper use of chemicals but I know better. I flush my take after each trip to clear water runs and add chemicals for storage.

I just know there is a leak somewhere either in the tank or in the plumbing to the roof vents. I could not get my dealer to drop the underbelly as they said FR would not pay them enough in warranty time to do it and suggested I call FR.

Before I did that I performed a test to prove there is an air leak in the system bu connecting my leaf blower to the sewer clean out connection. I then lit a smoke bomb and fed the smoke into the leaf blower intake and cracked open the bayonet valve (yes, it was an empty cleaned tank..lol) and let the blower force smoke into the black tank only. I checked the basement and could see no smoke but as soon as I went in the RV I could smell the smoke and then saw it coming out the return vent on the furnace.

I sent the video to my dealer and they sent it to FR. I then got hold of Sullena Halsey at FR and she hooked me up the Orvin Fry of Amish Family RV Service who is going to take care of the issue. Unfortunately he is a very busy shop and said he could get to us in January. We are Floridians and no nothing about winterizing much less driving in such weather so we go in late April.

Long story, but hopefully your issue is easier than ours.

I would definitely start by checking the vents thru the roof. There was a very good post on here about someone who found that when the vent pipe was run to the roof they did not seal around the pipe and the exhaust from the vent could be pulled back into the RV when a fan runs. When the fan runs and your RV is all closed up it creates a negative pressure inside and try’s to draw air from anywhere it can.

Here is the post, I found it. Start at post #15.. http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...l-73081-2.html

I bet your smell is coming from the furnace return because you smell it by the front door as it heads to the bathroom.
Good luck.. it is definitely frustrating...

If you have washer drain pipes in the closet, check the cap on the washer drain if washer is not installed. We were getting gases through the drain line. Cap was not on tight.
Sealed it with some silicone on the cap threads. Eliminated the problem....
