PIN Weight with Generator

Considering ordering the new 34RL2 which has a listed Hitch Weight of 2270. Amazon has the Onan 5.5kw LP generator showing a weight of 279 lbs. So by adding this generator I could expect the PIN weight to increase 279 lbs? I think this is a no brainer but just wanted to get a sanity check.

Understand there could be a couple of pounds of additional wiring but no increase for fuel since it would use the standard installed LP tanks.

Actually, not that simple. It all depends on where on the RV the generator is installed. The closer to the pin the gen is installed then more of its total weight is added to the pin. If behind the axles then it would decrease the pin weight. where does a generator install on your RV?

Front storage compartment just behind the pin box.

My guess is that you're right and the vast majority of it will end up as pin weight.

I'm pretty sure that published weights do not include weight of options. In the case of a generator option, you also need to consider the weight of the 'Generator Prep' option which includes insulation and shielding to keep noise and more particularly fumes from penetrating the living space. When I checked into adding a generator to my front storage, I was shown storage bin lining that is basically an aluminum box that seals the bay. Also added was an exhaust pipe. Sorry, but I didn't ask what the weight add was. If you know someone with a front installed Onan, perhaps they can tell you what the pin weight add on was.

Just curious but what is the price of the Onan? What does it run off?

34RLS?

Pin to center of axle pair - in inches = PA
Pin to center of mass of the generator - in inches = PG
(PG/PA)*290 (279# plus a little for transfer switch, etc) = the ratio
the ratio * 290 = weight on axles
290 - weight on the axles = weight on pin

For example (a WAG) if the center of gravity for the genset is 60" behind the pin and the pin to axle pair center is 275". The pin will carry almost 227# and the axles a little over 63#

FWIW, I would consider the sound and vibration, installing a fire proof box / housing; how hard that would be to do. Buying it with generator prep would solve that issue.

Runs on LP and cost about $4,200 just for the generator; not the prep. The option when ordered from FR is just over $6K.

I ordered my 2017 34RE with gen. Prep which included transfer switch, metal shielding, all necessary wiring, control panel inside unit with hour meter and start/stop switch. If I remember wright, I think it was $270.00. I figured I could get an Onan cheaper and install it myself. Wiring harness just plugs into Onan. I haven't found any propane line for the generator installed yet. I'm thinking you have to add another tank so even more pin weight. All that weight adds up quick. Not sure if it's worth it.
