With the hardwired version it is one less thing to mess with during setup. Also, the remote display is very useful for monitoring power usage.

PI EMS-HW30C. I'm too good at leaving things behind.

PI hard wire here

And if you think you will ever trade up, buy the 50 amp now.

On the hardwired version be sure to plug in the remote display before you turn on any power. It is the brains of the unit and it will not protect your electronics without it.
I saw it happen with the PI EMS-HW50C and it was not pretty. $960 to repair damaged converter and 45 inch tv.

Strongly, strongly, strongly recommend the hard wired version. We have the PI 50C and will always have one.

Shortly after purchasing our CC we had a failure (open neutral) in the shore cord, despite the fact we had a surge gard on the pole it was before the failed cord.

The open neutral did extensive damage to the trailer. Had we had a hard wired unit installed after the cord it would have caught the Open Neutral and saved a tremendous amount of grief on my part with FR.

X2 - recommend the hardwired because it is just one less thing you have to futz with when setting up & breaking camp.

Also, if you want absolutely bulletproof power, consider getting a Hayes Autoformer--especially on a high end unit like a Cedar Creek.

I'm in the minority here but I have the portable model. My thinking is if something does go wrong I want it to happen away from my camper, not in it. Pic of a fried surge protector:

I too agree with the portable unit. I have had my unit for seven years now and with two different 5er's. If I had installed a fixed unit in my first 5er I would have to purchase a new unit for my new 5er. And that is one cost I have not had to incur with our current trailer.

Progressive portable. 3 years. Zero issues. Our rv stays plugged in on site all winter. I simply put a chain and lock from Ace Hardware to prevent theft. Progressive has a "same owner" life guaranty. These units STOP any intrusion of fault at the POWER BOX. Your ac's are on a 2 minute delay. Pleased with Progressive!!

I like the hardwired unit. The remote display is nice to have setup inside the trailer to easily see what is occuring electrically. It won't take much to transfer it to a different RV when that day comes.

I have the portable one, I trade campers often. Plus if there is a problem I want the problem to be at the pedestal that way I save my expensive 50amp cable.

I'm a Progressive Industries hardwired guy ( HW 50C). We installed ours when we purchased our Creek last year. Have been greatly pleased with the unit.

I have a EMS-HW30C installed in my TT. Was simple to hook up myself. What took the longest was figuring out where to put it.

Take a look at these documents. They my help you decide.

Now what happens when you have a problem down line from the EMS unit?

Electrical happens all up and down the circuits. Bad power cord, bad converter, bad plugs, etc, etc.

FWIW I currently us a portable and probably will for the foreseeable future. I like the fact I can check the power on the post prior to getting backed in and set up.
