Rear cameras

AS others have posted the furrion and voyager cameras lose signal or freeze up.

I experienced the same with my Voyager.

What cured the problem was to get the 80" antenna extension and 35' of antenna cable from rvcams.com With these two items you can bring the antenna to the front cap of your 5er. Since doing so my voyager has not lost signal once.

How do you route the cable? I don't really want to screw cable clips on the roof as some others have suggested . . .
Ideas?

I dropped one belly panel down on one side and used fish tape to run it inside the underbelly. You have to drill a hole in the rear wall of the front compartment and further fish the wire under the bedroom floor out to the pin box where the wires already run for your TV power plug and emergency disconnect. Opposite the ladder side of the rear cap, I went inside the rear wall and out to the center where I mounted the camera. I'm with you on clips on the roof ... with time and patience there is a different approach.

dieselguy - Could you provide a couple of pictures of your installation. Did you use the antenna extension suggested by cbvp? I not sure how you got from the top of the end cap to the belly to route the cable. Also how did you go around the bedroom slide mechanism? Where is the antenna located? On the pin box?

My system is a hard wired one from RVCams ... I've not had good luck with the wireless and adding repeaters and such so I didn't order my fiver with the wireless camera. I have a Silverback with interior cabinets across the rear above the window. I drilled a hole in the bottom of the rear wall frame in the side opposite the ladder side about straight down from the electrical outlet in the wall. I then drilled a hole in the wall itself behind the rear cabinets near the ceiling and another right in the middle of the rear wall behind the cabinets near the ceiling inline with the existing exterior hole, where Furion wireless camera option was factory prepped. I removed the Furion camera base and fabbed an aluminum plate to attach the camera and cover the existing factory hole. I just fish taped the cable from the belly up thru the wall to the top hole. I ran the wire on top of the rear cabinets and out the center hole to the camera ... it's all hidden behind the cabinet fascia. As for the belly run ... the cable lays basically atop the belly pan, so it sits well below the slide mechanisms. The wire comes out from the hole I drilled in steel plate in back of the front storage compartment. It is routed up across the ceiling of the front storage compartment right along where the tow vehicle wiring runs forward to the pinbox hole. I ran the wire out along side the pinbox near where the breakaway switch is and left enough cable to plug into a the receptacle inside the bed of my truck right over the wheel well. From there the wire goes inside the rear wall of the truck cab, across the headliner, and down to the monitor I mounted in-between the sun visors. I don't have access to my fiver for a few days or I would post photos.

Thanks for the explanation. I did have the wireless camera in my unit but feel that routing a wire under the belly to a convenient place near the nose for the antenna would be a plan. I do not particularly want to stretch a wire over the top on the roof, even though others have attached it to the A/Cs. I am still not sure how they mount the extended antenna.

My Wildcat came with the Furrion Backup Model FRC12TA-BL that Furrion sells retail for $399. I didn't like it's performance for use as rearview while towing. I contacted them and they let me return and pay $75 upgrade to trade for their $499 model clicky: Furrion Observation Camera Model FOS48TA-BL. That camera has a much stronger wirless range and performs excellent and does not exhibit the wireless signal dropouts etc. The distance from my truck in cab to the back of the Wildcat is about 55 feet. As a bonus the screen is also higher res. Keep in mind each model represents a pair of devices, a camera and a monitor. Most important for me was that BOTH cameras fit the same Forest River bracket that is installed on the back of the trailer during manufacture. No alteration is required.

I also have the FRC12TA-Bl. It works but not impressed as the receiver is to small for either unit. That's the down side for me. No larger screen available. Later RJD

My camper is 35ft plus when truck is hooked up can add 15 more ft to that, I think I have found out how to make the camera work right, turn the truck around to face back of camper, works then. I checked on Furrion web site and it says for trailers up to 30ft, the next model is for 100ft but 100 bucks more. You would think Cedar Creek would know better

You have to wonder. Mine did not work either. I opened it up and changed the antenna location. It now sticks out the top and works better. Certainly not perfect but better. If purchasing one I would look elsewhere. $300 is way too much for something that doesn't work correctly.

Lastly, the Furrion supports 2 cameras. A second camera is available from Furrion for $75. I put the second camera in the back of the cab so I can see when hooking up. On a long pull, I place the second camera in the window at the back of the 5er. I've learned the high mounted camera #1 is really pointed more and the immediate ground behind the trailer which is great for backing up but not so good if you want to use it as a pseudo rear-view mirror (angle is too steep downward). By placing my second camera in the trailer back window, I can adjust the angle to give me an image that more like what you would see in a rear-view mirror.

I called up Cedar Creek and was told that Cedar Creek did not install the camera, they installed the wiring, the dealer installed the camera. Who is right?

If the camera is ordered from the factory, only the wiring is done and the mount bracket installed. This allows the factory to insure that the bracket and wire holes are properly sealed. The camera in it's retail box is shipped inside the trailer along with the Televisions and remotes. Actual installation of the camera into the bracket is done as part of the dealer's prep. You remove the 4 tiny screws that hold the cover plate on the bracket and then use those same 4 tiny screws to hold the camera in. The camera basically takes the place of the cover plate. By the way, it is so easy, anyone could do it in about 5 minutes. I've taken mine down and installed the upgraded model and it literally took longer to take it out of the box than to mount it in the factory installed bracket.

Most new TT come camera ready bracket and wiring done at factory. The dealer is the one messing up. When I bought my new TT they ask me if I wanted to add the system I said yes but was not told there was more than one choice. They sold me the cheapest one which they had to order and I could bring the TT back to install or I could do my self. So I saved a $100 as I installed the system. The camper place had the camera shipped straight to my house. Now my tt is 35 ft so it is really not the right model to use for my camper but the dealer never mentioned that I would need the other model.

bottom line is need to ask dealer which model will work for your length of camper. Mine works but they need to make a larger 7 inch viewing screen.

I guess I'm being thick-headed but I don't get the advantage of having a backup camera. I'm pretty much a novice but I am able to back pretty well using my side mirrors and my DW as a spotter. (37 foot Cedar Creek) She knows exactly what to watch for and I have the added advantage of being able to blame it on her if I hit something <LOL>.

It's like having a back up camera on your truck or car. It also helps to see your guide person if they should they disappear from your rear view mirror . I'm also a seasoned camper and have backed many a trailer into tight spots. Later RJD
