Replacing water filter canister

I was told the KW1 canister was discontinued, to get the replacement canister which I did. I was told it was easy to replace the bracket and the canister. I see the fittings going into the canister have to be removed they donít just turn out. Do I have to replace the lines and the pressure fittings or is there a easier fix for this?

You'll probably have to buy a couple of clamps for PEX pipe and borrow/rent/buy a crimping tool.

Hardest part is getting the old fittings out of the Pex pipe but if you remove the clamps and just turn them in the pipe (a little heat from a hair dryer will let the PEX expand some to free up from the fittings) until they are free of the filter base. Replace the old base with the new, screw in fittings, replace clamps, install filter and canister.

If one or both of the fittings are "L" fittings just buy a total of four clamps and a piece of PEX (Blue as it's cold water line). You can buy 5' pieces at Home Depot and others. Remove the clamps on the PEX pipe where it joins the rest of the system. You'll probably have to put a slit in the pipe over the barb fitting so it will slide off. Repeat at the fittings on the filter base. Cut new PEX pipe at the same lengths and reassemble. You will definitely need the proper crimping tool if you want the fittings to NOT leak.

I just bought a PEX crimping kit when I did mine. The kit was $25.00 and came with a bunch of clamps:
https://www.amazon.com/Jinwen-120017.../dp/B074K6R4D2

I swapped mine over to a GXWH20S filter. I like the fact that it has a built in bypass valve and the filters are easy to get and very reasonable.

the original post said the kw1 canister is being discontinued. 6 then said the fr1 hsg is being discontinued but a direct replacement rcs canister is available that still uses the kw1 canister.

i real fast scan on the internet confirms that the fr1 hsg is being replaced by the rcs canister. but it is not a direct replacement as you cannot use the top from the fr1 with a rcs housing. the rcs housing comes with a new top that you must install to use it.

the kw1 filter cartridge is still used in the rcs hsg.

so that begs the question. if you have to remove your existing top in order to install the top for the rcs in order to use the kw1 filter, why not just install some other brand housing and filter? there have been more than a few posts by people recommending this.

of course, you do not have to do this until you need a new fr1 housing.

FR1/KW1 being discontinued? Alleluia! Praise the Lord! I'm glad they finally decided to do away with that piece of crap!
