Silverback 29RE

The DW and I are looking at the Silverback 29RE and are wondering if there is another brand that is just like it, (like the Rockwood vs Flagstaff) and if there are any issues anyone has had with this model. We are currently in a 2009 Flagstaff 831FKBSS and are towing with a Dodge 2500 Cummings turbo diesel long bed so I know that my tow vehicle is good to go. Are these 5th wheels available thru RV direct and what would be a good price for this model? What options should we look for that are really needed? We camp mostly in the northeast with a few trips down as far as SC. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Be cautious if it has China Bomb tires or a WFCO converter.

Fifth wheels will place much more load on the truck than your rt does. 20% of the divers weight can add over 2000 pounds directly over the rear axle. Do you have that much capacity?

As far as I know Forest River doesn't have another product that is similar to the Cedar Creek, especially in quality. That Silverback you're looking at is a great match for your truck.

I don't think RV Direct carries the Cedar Creek line, but Jeff Couch's RV Nation would be a good alternative.

If you plan to go RVing in the hotter parts of our country, I would have the 2nd air conditioner installed for the options. You might want to consider the king bed and central vac system too.

With a GVWR of 13,600 pounds this is definitely NOT a good match for a 3/4 ton truck. My Cedar Creek has a GVWR of about the same weight and my pin weight is over 3000 pounds. That is going to put the OP's truck way over his GVWR. The Op will want a 1 ton, preferably a dually before he pulls the trigger on this much fiver.

You're basing that on the weight rating of the trailer, not the actual weight. You're assuming that he's going to put over three thousand eight hundred pounds of gear in his fifth wheel to get to the maximum carrying capacity. That's almost two tons of gear, clothes, and food. Man, that's a lot of stuff!

The dry kingpin weight of that Silverback model is 16.5% of the trailer's weight and is just over 1600 pounds. He would be hard pressed to load that trailer to the point that the pin weight would be 3000 pounds.

In the OP's statement he said he already knew he had enough truck so I'm sure he knows what he is doing. I believe he was looking for advice about comparable models and places to purchase. Not a statement from the self-proclaimed "weight police."

And you are assuming that the numbers posted in the brochure by Forest River are some what close. Like I said earlier, my CC carries nearly the same numbers and without loading it for full timing I am at the trailers GVWR and my pin weight is over 3K. I do not guess, I have weighed it several times and they are always very close. By the time the OP were to load it up for a summers worth of camping that trailer will guaranteed have a pin weight that will put his 2500 series Dodge way over his trucks GVWR. That is why it is not an advisable combination.

The wife and I travel fairly light (we enjoy eating dinner in various resturants) and have mostly light weight camping accessorys...I would never come close to adding 3800 worth of gear. My trucks towing capacity is around 13,000 lbs so a dry weight of 9800 is an easy pull as I only put 2-3 gallons of fresh water and always travel with empty grey and black tanks. We are not in a rush to buy but are keeping our options open. Thanks for all the good feed back!

We have a 2011 29RE we pull it with an F250 with no problems. We found prices from 38,500 to 52,000. Check Right Stop RV just south of Louisville KY

We just bought a 29re and awaiting delivery. Seems like a good price is 40000 +/- fully loaded. This is are second cedar creek love them.

Don, i like my 29 re unit .did you buy the 29re? If you did i know that you are very happy with it.If you did not let us know which unit you did buy.
we have our unit for a year now and have no trouble. I am waiting for warmer days so we can take it out on a trip.

we have the 29re 2011 model and love it let us know how your first camping trip go. you will like the room in living room. we love all the windows when we are on lake sde.

Just bought a 29RE and can't wait to pick it up. Love the floor plan with the opposing slides. Between 38500-40000 is about average.

FYI when the 29RE was on our shortlist couple weeks ago the dealer was at 40K loaded including Thermopane windows. I think I could've talked him down another grand. We really liked the cathedral ceilings!

Im not ready to buy yet now that I've hit a dilemma, I have also looked at the Sabre 34reqs and really like that unit...I'm thinking now of waiting 3 more years...thats when the DW and I retire and will make a decision then. Thanks for all the great feedback and will keep all posted when the time comes to make a decision!
