smell......????

Hey All

I am posting this for a fellow Cedar Creek'r.

They Have a 2008 model about a 33ft 5th wheel. They have an awful odor from the fridge / furnace area. They have had the vents cleaned, plumbing checked, no signs of leaks or stains in the carpet or floor. The smell is very noticeable when the furnace first starts. You can also smell it in the pass-through on the same side as the fridge.

I was thinking something is leaking from the fridge coolant or...? It is not a propane smell it is more like an ammonia or urethane smell.

Someone suggested a rat in the drain pipe or something dying in the grey tank but then why the strong smell when the furnace kicks in...???

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as they have lost sleep over it and had to spend a couple nights away already.

Wondering what is used in the fridge for coolant now..? They think...not sure thought they saw a pinkish colored solution one time but never again.

I agree. Ammonia smell is a coolant leak. Examine the coils for a yellow colored deposit and it will show you the location of the leak.

Is the ammonia a heavy gas that would settle in the vents and be blown around when the furnace kicks on..?

Yep- heard of people dying while applying anhidrous to fields when a leak is detected and they got out to check and the fumes at ground level overcame them.
- lou is right, bet their fridge doesn't work or is about to stop.
