Many 5th wheels already have enclosed steps and most I have seen have access to the space under them via a hinged tread.

Our steps are carpeted and only the bottom tread has an opening lid.
A rather poor design as the space within the top step / riser is not used or accessible .

On my 'to-do-list' is to replace both steps with stained matching wooden ones and provide access for storage to both spaces.
The steps are not only a good storage area (when available) but they are very handy for frequently used items .

Even if the task is outside of your skill level.... it really shouldn't cost too much to have a finish carpenter fabricate a new set of steps or alter the existing to provide storage.

Hope this helps

Central Vac is under my steps, and also I mounted my AC subpanel there for my inverter. Open the sliding paneling cover in your basement and you can see the "stuff" under there.

I did what your thinking of doing on my Sons Cedar Creek 362BBS.

The whole step assembly unscrewed from the floor and wall. I did reinforce the assembly at the corners.

Hope these pictures are helpful.
