I recently bought my F-250 gasser but my TT is only 7360# loaded, I never tow in the mountains and don't tow more than a couple times a month within a day's drive (usually under 3-4 hours).

The OP is talking about a CC 33IK and I'd definitely want a diesel to tow that 5er regardless of where I'm towing or how often.

For me the breaking points to go with a diesel would be either one of these factors:
- trailer weighing over 10,000#, or
- towing in the mountains in the west definitely, maybe the Appalachians depending on how many miles per year.

Around here, diesel has been consistently cheaper than gas for a few years at least, but the upgrade to a diesel will run you around CAD$9,000 on a new Ford F-Series. (Once in a while you can get a RAM when they have their "free Cummins Diesel upgrade" event, but I refuse to buy another Chrysler product).

I tried so hard not to chime in..but I just wanted clarification. (and only facts here) Diesels are claimed to have longer life, since the rest of the truck is exactly the same we are pretty much talking only the long block and associated diesel only components...

Generally people get rid of their vehicles because they want newer/better, not that I know of because the engine is worn...??

I guess my question, who out there has had to trade their gasser in because it needed a new long or short block?

Dang, I replace or rebuild gas engines very often, and I'm only one technician!

I think my 2012 was a $6k upgrade. $9k sounds like a lot.

Diesel upgrade on a Ford or a Ram are 8,000.00. I have had both been running a diesel since 1980 wouldn't have anything else I never worry about if I can pull it or not.

curious as the reasons? Just tired and low compression? throwing of rods...?? Lack of maintenance?

As I said, last summer, here in Ontario, Canada, it was about CAD$9,000 to upgrade to the diesel. The F-250s are built in Kentucy and the currency exchange costs us an extra $0.35 to $0.37 on every dollar. US$6,000 would be about CAD$8,200. Add in any duty, fees, etc. and you get to CAD$9,000 pretty quickly. I don't know what the upgrade costs in US dollars today vs. 2012.

Bought both a 2016 F250 and 2016 F350 ~~ 6.7 in both diesel option was $8440 in the US. Almost zero gassers on the lots, must be few buyers interested.

When I bought my gasser last summer, I had 6 to chose from. Maybe they can't keep'em in stock in your area!

No ~~ of course I only looked at real trucks,,, Ford Super Duty. F250 is very popular, less so on the F350 but neither in a gasser has much of a following, not that I'd want one to pull the 5er with anyway. Under 10,000# they should be fine.

Pulled my 34 ft 5er with my 1 ton chevy dully with 6.0 gas and did just fine. You buy the truck to meet your needs and diesel was not in my future due to cost(presently a 9 grand option no thanks.) So my towing did not require one. Later RJD
