Weight limits on 3/4 ton truck

Does anyone have an opinion on this question. I have a 2016 F-250 Super Duty, we currently pull a forest river crusader that has a GVWR of 10037 lbs. Looking at a forest river cedar creek that has a GVWR of 14000 lbs. Is the extra weight a problem with a 3/4 ton truck? Any opinions will be welcomed

Where you will get into trouble is when you start looking at your payload. The pin weights on many 5ers quickly eat up that precious 2500 (more or less) lbs of payload.

The pin weight will be in the neighborhood of 2800+ lbs. So not being familiar with this particular truck's specs I do believe you would not have much if any remaining cargo carrying capacity after adding a couple of people, a hitch, a cooler or snacks and maybe a dog or two.
Cedar Creeks really need a 1 ton truck IMHO.

There should be a sticker on the driver's door frame that will state the limits for that truck as shipped from the factory. Add-ons such as running boards, bed liners caps, etc. will reduce those limits

I towed a 32 foot 5th wheel with a 2000 F250 super duty with a v10 engine that weighted about 9200 loaded. The truck did fine with that load but going up steep mountains and such the engine would roar. I currently pull a 40 foot Sanibel very similar to the cedar creek and when loaded I place about 3000 pounds pin weight on the truck. Currently I use a F350 dual wheel diesel engine 1 ton truck. The 1 ton truck handles the 5th easily.
There is no way my old F250 would be able to handle the 40 foot trailer.
As others have said read the sticker on the driver door frame to see what your exact truck is capable of handling. Also the weights in the book are for the basic model with no options every option adds weight to the unit. I have seen CC owners on the forum state that their basic unit had a 3700 pound pin weight prior to placing anything in the unit.

A better question may end up being does anyone not have an opinion?

You didn't say if your truck is gas or diesel, as that will make a big difference in payload. That's what the whole thing will probably boil down to is payload.

3/4 tons are tricky because they are similar to 1 tons, but by definition are limited to 10,000 GVWR. So your payload sticker is limited by that max GVWR even if all the mechanical parts are capable of more. I'm more familiar with Fords than other brands, but on the Ford truck forums there are endless debates and arguments about whether the 250 is the same truck as a 350 just with a lower GVWR and payload sticker. I think some physical differences have been verified, but they aren't drastic. So then the opinions and speculation start. I know I marvel at some of the monster 5th wheels I see going down the road behind 3/4 tons. They look fine but you gotta believe they are way over the payload sticker.

Start with a payload calculation to compare your truck's payload with the pin weight plus passengers and gear and see where you are at and then go from there.

And hopefully when all is said and done you still welcome our collective opinions...

Thinking before you pull the trigger on that trailer you may want to go truck shopping!

I think a 14,000 lb fifth wheel will be too much forF250

BT,DT and it aint pretty. Current CC scales at 13,500 pounds and carries a scaled pin weight at 3,500 pounds. Started with a 2500, could not wait to get rid of that and get the correct tool. My 3500 dually pulls like a dream and handles the mountains of the far west much better than the overloaded 2500 ever did.

I had a F250 and Traded for a F 350 Went from CCC of 2300 lbs to 3800 lbs and crew cab too boot.

F250 is not enough truck for 14,000 GVRW. I have a 16,000 lb Heartland Bighorn with a pin 3000 lbs loaded so I am within specs. Still have CCC for people and fuel and maybe some firewood.

Neighbor has been pulling a 38' Montana...just south of 15000# with 2004 Silverado 2500HD diesel for almost 10 years now. Two 8000 mile trips thru the Northwest and he's had zero problems.

Here are how my numbers would work with a 5th wheel.

Truck: Chevy Silverado 2500HD Diesel
Cargo capacity: 2500lbs
Weight of passengers and cargo: 1000lbs
Leftover capacity for tongue / pin weight 1500lbs
Assuming 20% 5th wheel pin weight, the HEAVIEST 5er I can tow safely weighs 7500lbs

That seems low. My 2014 Jimmy will pull 13,000 loaded. Crew cab even.

That's probably your towing capacity. If you look at your cargo capacity numbers, you will probably find your pin weight is too heavy.

The towing planner application was a great help to me in planning my fifth wheel/truck combination. Here's a link:

What a truck will pull and what it is rated to pull are two different animals.

Your rating is also dependent on what you licensed your truck at. Depending on the state you live in, many people will down rate their truck to save on licensing fees.

The only way to verify you are within your limits is to weigh your rig.

17,000 if I go to "Capacity".
