West Lake Tires

I'm glad to hear the people with West Lake tires that they are performing well. Thanks for your feed back I have yet to find one person with West Lake ST tire failure.

We were at a dealership yesterday looking at Cedar Creeks. If the coach was on the lot for a little while they had Goodyear tires.. The newest arrivals had Westlake G rated.
The one page flyer for the 2015's now show 7000 lbs axles on the 34rl and all sizes show 16" G-rated tires. Where as the previous brochure shied 6000 lb axles on the 34 rl and the 7000 lb as an option. The 7000 lb coaches used to show Goodyear LT 235/85 R16/G tires.

It ALL boils down to personal experience. Goodyear Marathons are made in China too, and I had $1800 worth of damage done to my pickup with brand new Cooper Discoveries a couple years ago due to thread separation. Both of these companies were suggested by CarsDirect. And I don't even think Cooper makes ST tires....do they? I'll keep my WestLakes.

Anyway... See my sig. We've now got about 10k miles on our Westlakes. 7K axles, with Westlake ST235 80R 16, I am very diligent about the pressure and it stays at 80 psi (cold) and also us an IR temp gun to check both the truck and trailer tires, axle hubs, brakes and rear diff temps when travelling. I usually check temps, check trailer psi, truck oil / coolant and a lights visual while fueling up. Never a problem. Always have peace of mind. Just sayin'.

This last trip was about 6K miles and we did notice more than normal wear on the trailer's front right tire, on the outer edge. I'll be pulling the wheels to clean, inspect, repack bearing and replace seals along with inspecting and adjusting the brakes and inspecting and tightening the suspension.

So far the Westlakes have been fine and I will probably replace the worn tire with another Westlake (found them for about $150 online), but I need to identify and correct the cause of the wear.

FWIW, the trailer was mfg'd 7/12/13, the showroom (indoors) and at two loval RV shows unit. The tires were mfg'd first week of April, 2013 (stamped 1413). We bought it in November of 2013. We've got 168 nights camping and about 10K miles on it. I perform ALL maintenance and repairs on everything (bikes, motorcycles, truck and trailer) because I can and I trust my work. The end result is that we are quite happy with it.

I would email the FR rep back and ask for a detailed answer knowing full well Good year has not changed the tire. It boils down to cost. GY 614 are very expensive and I suspect there cost went down by half to change over.

My rep made a point of saying the SB. did not come with China made tires. I think the rep said what he said to put to rest any resistance to them putting an inferior tire on the coach compared to the GY 614.

I need to clarify my above statement. My position is the GY 614 is a better tire by far over the lake tire. My intent was not to offend with my "inferior" wording. The 614 is the best trailer tire for RV's of this size but one pays for this quality compared to the other tires available.

Just got back from the 4200 mile trip so that makes about 6000 miles total on these West Lake tires. I had absolutely no problem with my tires (are anything else for that mater). I kept a close eye on them with IR gun and tire gauge most every day. 110 psi never lost as much as a pound the whole trip. Tires look to have worn very even with no abnormality at all. I feel much better about the West Lake tires. I will continue to be Leary and watch closely but I am not so sure China isn't finally getting this Mfg. thing figured out. I know some will never accept this but most of you are old enough to remember (Made In Japan) was the joke we used to say. Now look at the products coming out of their.
I hope this post doesn't come back to haunt me but for now I am satisfied with my China Tires........

I found a bad wear pattern on my left front 5r. Tire shop service manger says once a wear pattern is made you never get out of it. Mine was from backing into a concrete pad, so the service manager says. I'm glad I caught it when I did. whew! My bearings and seals checked out good. Changed the tire to new and never had that problem again.

I have just over 2200 miles on my Westlake 205-75-14 C rated tires and the right rear tire developed a two blisters and went flat. Stopped at a Kaufman Tire Store and replaced it with a Carlisle. The manager told me Westlakes should only be used as a spare. I will probably be ordering Marathon D's tomorrow.

Are you sure the Marathons are available in D' better to go with Kumho 857 or Hankook RA08. Both are true load range D, 8 ply rated.

I bought my Hankooks from the busdepot.com and had a local shop mount and balance them. Hankook size 195r14 is the correct diameter and carries 2100# instead of the 1760 that range c carries. They are also rated to 99 mph. I think they were around $100 each and about 60 to ship, anyway total came to $500 and some change, sold the old (1 Year) westlakes for $150 to local guy who needed a set for his utility trailer.

I have Goodyear Marathon LR D's on my Flagstaff, but they are 15".
