Winterizing stacked washer & dryer

Question about washer. When running antifreeze from rear to front, do I start the washer and allow the pump go suck solvent into the machine so I can see it and then shut it off or just pour the antifreeze into the machine nd let it drain down??
Always took it South/West with us and never had to do it. Now leaving it to survive the MI. cold by itself.
Suggestions on the washer will be appreciated. Thanks
