Hot water screams

Hello again!

Question about the water valve. Ever since I've cleaned out the water heater, the hot water screams when I turn it on (kitchen, bathroom and shower). It only screams when the hot water is on.

Water heater is an Atwood GC6AA-10E. I've called the water heater company and they said that the water valve needs to be replaced. This makes sense as I can hear and feel the sound coming from the valve. I've tried played with it a little to see if I can make the sound go away (whether it's an 'air in the system' issue or something else) but it hasn't worked.

Currently boondocking so I don't have an unlimited supply of water to flush and test it, but the sound has been going on since I cleaned it out last and hasn't worked it's way out (over a month ago). We are full-timers so we've run a lot of water through in that time.

Any ideas or experience with this? I'd hate to just replace it if there is a different or easier fix. We have a 2007 Coachmen Freelander.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried pulling the temperature/pressure valve on the outside to see if there's a big air bubble in the tank? Shouldn't require you to dump a whole lot of water if you do that.

Shall we assume this is a tankless water heater?
No make/model of the heater listed.

If it's the pressure relief valve opening it with the toggle and then snapping it closed sometimes reseats it completely. If it's tankless this is a moot input.

Thanks for your comments!

Water heater is an Atwood GC6AA-10E. I called Atwood and they told me it was the water valve. This makes sense because when the water is on I can hear and feel the screaming coming from there.

I've tried the release valve on the water heater and this hasn't fixed the issue.

Has anyone ever had to replace the water valve before? It only happens when the hot water is on...

Thanks again!

Most likely one of the valves is not fully on. you most likely have a valve on both cold and hot sides, they both need to be fully ON. The bypass valve is already off otherwise you would be complaining about hot not being hot enough. YOU DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH AIR IN YOUR WATER HEATER.

Thanks Artspe! We've checked to make sure that the valve is fully on. You're correct that we do not have issues with water not being hot enough, and I agree with you the problem isn't with the water heater. If the valve is fully on and still screaming, do you think it would need to be replaced?

Try turning it off and then turn on the hot water faucet. There should be enough residual pressure to at least get some amount of hot water. It you don't hear the scream, replace the valve. Another option is to switch the two valves (hot to cold and cold to hot).

Thank you for the suggestions! We tried this and the sound comes back on when the hot water valve is switched back open.

How do I go about switching the valves? I've not thought of that... assuming the sound isn't some indication of a future problem or leak, I'm up to try this!

Not really seeing your set up, I would think just shut off all water to the unit and then just take both valves out and switch their places.
