Oil change interval on Ford V-10

I have a 2016 Leprechaun 319DS with a Ford V-10. The manual says that the oil must be changed every six months or the warranty may not be any good. I'm getting the oil changed now at 22K miles and will begin my RV season. Say I drive 5000 miles by September, change the oil again and shut her down for the winter. Do they really expect me to change the oil again in March, 2017 after not driving it all winter? Do people really do this? Thanx.

Yes, The idea being to keep moisture and acid content in the oil in check. If you took an oil sample it would probably be fine. We go up to a year in our fleet vehicles that sit seasonally if they are out of warranty.

Thanx Mars. "if they are out of warranty." That's the rub. If mine were out of warranty, we wouldn't be having this dialogue. But I'm expected to dump out seven quarts of unused oil (and filter) just to satisfy the warranty requirements.

Unused, maybe.
Condensation, yes.

Not sure where people get their oil changed, but my local Ford Dealer runs about $40. Compared to an engine rebuild, it's a steel.

Myself I change every spring regardless since I run the engine at least once a month in the winter. I know there is condensation in oil.

Since I put on less than 4,000 miles per year, I change my oil once a year. However I put in synthetic oil which I believe is less prone to the problems of non synthetic oil. I hope I am right.

Makes sense...but the factory doesn't let you extend the interval if you use synthetic. And, in fact, they recommend synthetic even while demanding change every six months.

Oil change intervals

are stipulated by Ford to account for folks who put lots of highway miles on (mileage limit) and folks that never run their vehicle long enough in cold weather to get oil temp up and boil off the condensate(time limit). I bet if you talk to the local dealer service manager he will tell you the time thing is loosely enforced, may have some good tips on preparing the chassis for the layup period and what you need to do to put it back in service. I have a 2011 Ford E350 van and it only has about 21,000 miles on it because I use it in summer to launch boats and do some hauling of other trailers at our summer home in Michigan's UP. I change oil and filter in late October-early November and buy my own Motorcraft or Valvoline synthetic blend oil usually because the local dealer at the cottage doesn't even have a hoist so it's 40 miles to a bigger dealer. I signed up on the Ford Owners website and record each service I perform.

Welcome to Ford Owner | Official Ford Owner Site

It takes me about 30 minutes to change oil and filter, hit the front end fittings with the grease gun, inspect or change the air filter and other fluid levels and top them up. Then it goes on a battery tender with a full tank of fuel and I don't see it again until mid-late April, it's locked up in the garage. I've dealt with numerous Ford dealers, had several warranty jobs done and have never been challenged on my oil change frequency. My 2014 Ford Focus which is still in warranty sits quite a bit in winter in our garage at home as well, I take it to the dealer for oil and filter at around 5,000 mile intervals because it has a belly pan that has to be removed to access the oil filter and he inspects the car and rotates the tires. Never been challenged that I am not meeting warranty requirements on oil changes even though it's often 7-8mos. between last oil change in summer and next one the following summer. When it's summertime we often put 7-8,000 miles on the car so it get's a couple of oil changes before it goes back to winter time out. If you have a major engine problem that Ford can directly relate to abuse like never changing the oil that's different but if you change once a year at end of season just before laying up and you are only putting 5-6,000 miles on between changes I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it.

Be Kind!

Some of us were unaware of oil condensation and acidity, thanks to the forum, now we know!

Oil change is what, $60?? I do it once a year. I go to the local place that has the overhead clearance to get it on their rack. They also do the grease fittings and change the geni oil/filter, but I have to bring them the geni oil filter. $100 total.

Please do not use " high mileage " oil, unless you have a ton of miles.

High mileage has additives, used to soften of swell seals.
Not needed, unless your engine has " high mileage "
