I use a SSP-50XL portable surge protector. There are a couple things I do not like about it:
1) The new cover on it can't close if used with a cord that has the "Power Grip" end on it, so it is in effect useless to protect it from the weather.
2) It is not the most expensive surge protector, but I still wouldn't like that it could be stolen off the power pole while in use at a park. A bicycle cable lock isn't going to stop much if someone really wants it.
I decided to put it inside my storage compartment. I only had to order one each male and female 50 amp replacement cord ends and I had some leftover 6/3-8/1 wire from the installation of my outlet in my garage - about 2 feet. I removed the existing power cord from the junction box and installed a female end on it. It becomes a 35' 50 amp extension cord now.
I wired the 6/3-8/1 wire into the junction box and installed the male connector to it. Since I do not have an automatic transfer switch, this allows me to plug this into the connection for the generator rather than the entire 35' of cord plugged into it when on the road. When at home or a park, I plug the 2' cable into the SSP-50XL and it into the 35' cord or the 25' extension I also have, whichever is needed or both.
The surge protector stays inside the storage compartment and I also get the benefit or testing/protection of the power cords also.
