The whole assembly is a left over from the 70's. They just use it because it is cheap and readily available. No need to hook the TV directly to it.
You do know you that you need to set each TV for Air and run a channel scan? Also the antenna can be rotated to help pull in some weaker channels. We typically get 25-40 OTA when camping in our regular areas. I use an app like DTV Antenna to find the closest stations and which way to point the antenna.
