Question Towing 2012 Dodge Ram??

I was wondering if it is possible to tow a 2012 Dodge Ram pick up truck with my 2015 Coachman encounter 37 tz. I will not be carrying any water with me so that will cut down on some of the weight.

You do not state what the tow load rating of the Coachman is nor what type of Ram you have. Such as 4X4, diesel/gas and manual or Auto, cab style or SB/LB and or SRW/DRW truck this all makes a difference in the answer.

My 2008 Mega Cab truck which is a diesel, Auto, 4X4 SRW truck will weigh in over 8,000 LBS unloaded with a full tank of diesel 34 Gallons.

It is a 2012 Dodge ram diesel 4 door. I was told when I bought motorhome home that I could tow 10,000 pounds. I bought and installed a blue ox tow hitch and blue ox brake system and did a test run and it was great but them someone told me that truck is to heavy that I only have a tounge weight of 5000 pounds. I have over $2000.00 invested in this.

On a gasser it is usually 5,000 lbs
Our DP is only rated at 7,500 lbs

toaded truck

one of the new Colorado or Canyon mid size trucks with crew cab and 4x4 will be your best way to go or a new f-150 with the small 6 cyl.

If your hitch and blue ox rated for 10,000 # you should nor have any problem pulling. Your mileage will suffer for sure. My DP has 425 HP and 1250 # torque. I have pulled my truck Ram 3500 many miles before I decided to by a Jeep. to tow.
You good to go.
Cheers

I have a friend who tows a 2014 Ram Hemi behind his Phaeton DP. He has a problem with the dash data system staying energized and using battery while towing. Other than that, tows fine.

Hey MWolcott. We have an Encounter TZ 37 as well.

Towing capacity with the Encounter is 5000 pounds. Here is what the internet responded with regarding curb weight:

2012 RAM 2500 6.7L Diesel Manual 4WD Crew Cab, Curb weight: 6,639 lbs

That would be over the hitch and chassis rated tow limit. Something else to consider; The 37 TZ is almost 38 feet long which is big for a gas chassis. The Triton engine has a lot of heart but does have limits. I pull a wrangler 4 dr that weighs just over 4000 pounds and frankly I think that's about as much as the chassis can handle. My fuel mileage is about 6.9 miles a gallon when towing in hilly country; less in the mountains.

Several members have posted about DP towing specs, you know of course that the gas drivetrain does not produce near the torque that a diesel does and diesel motorhome chassis tend to be heavier built and so are capable of hauling and towing more than their gas counterparts. I would disregard any towing comments about diesel pusher rigs, you don't have a diesel pusher, (neither do I).

Don't despair though, we can have our rigs serviced for a fraction of the cost of servicing a DP. So what if we can only climb the mountain at 60 MPH. ;-)
