Transferring a base plate

BluOx tow bar and baseplate.

Dealer installed base plate on my 2010 Wranger (4-dr). Had to install diodes in rear brake wiring to prevent feed back into front turn signals, headlights, etc.

Now I want to move the base plate over to the 2012 Jeep Wrangler (4dr).

I had planned to take it to the Dealer who did the original install but I wonder if it is really all that complicated and if I can just do it myself. I have tools and some experience around and under cars.

Is there anything about installing a baseplate that requires a dealer install?

Did you try going to the BluOx website? Last time I checked they have pretty detailed instructions and videos on the install.

I just did a baseplate install on a 2012 Chevy Cruze.

It was not difficult, more of PITA. Just follow the instructions carefully.

I would imagine there is minimal difference between a '12 and '13 Jeep...

I talked to the dealer and to BlueOx and have decided to do the switch myself. Dealer says there isn't any reason I can't do it and like Maladjusted suggested, says to just follow the instructions. For $10 BlueOx is sending me a bag of bolts. They recommended using new fasteners which for the price sounded like a good idea. Dealer (and the instructions I downloaded from BlueOx) show it is really pretty simple; just nuts and bolts.

For wiring, I ordered the wiring kit that has the bulbs and sockets. I was against this at first, not wanting to drill into the rear light housings but changed my mind thinking it really was the easier way to go and this way I'm not dicing and splicing the Jeeps wiring systems.

DW is a little nervous about it but I'll hold her hand and reassure her it will be fine. Holding her hand just inhibits her ability to give me a good smack. LOL

If the Jeep install has the bolts welded to a plate with a 10 inch rod on them to get them inside the frame... Those are the biggest pain. Just be patient... Make sure you don't cross thread. Use red loctite (high strength... Comes in a blue bottle now... So make sure you get the high strength).

Use a little rope caulk under the head to stick bolts to a plate to keep them from falling off when reaching into a difficult place.

I did change my mind about the wiring kit. Decided to go with the kit from Cool Tech Cool Tech LLC. JK Tow Harness Kit .

It apparently just plugs directly into the Jeep wiring. Liked this option best but will hold on to the bulb kit in case the Cool Tech kit does not function as represented.
