FR was supposed to upgrade the water heater from a propane only to propane/electric. If you have the latter, you can just leave it on electric and it will know what source you're using.

The frig will switch automatically if on auto, but never heard of a water heater switching from one to the other.

Mine automatically switches to propane when electric isn't available.

This is curious, as I also have never heard of it. If it's an "automatic" occurrence, as suggested, then it would seem to be one or the other. How do you use both electric and propane at the same time, if you wanted?
Have ya read posts 18, 19, and 20 on the previous page? I may be totally wrong, but have a nagging feeling ya may have been using propane only this whole time....and may have never turned on the electric heating element as per the link in post 19.... or possibly have left the electric on the entire time and then turn the propane on, if you just have the one switch inside the coach.
Here is the FAQ link again from post 19 that explains the Suburban water heater, and the TWO different switches you use to control the propane and electric heating element.

wmtire... The switch I referred to is not inside the coach. It's on the water heater. What I'm saying is that if you leave that switch in the gas position, it'll use propane only, all the time. If you set the switch to the electric side, the water heater will sense if shore power is hooked up and won't use propane.
Unfortunately, when my FR3 was built, FR was installing the propane only model water heater. They switched to the dual model about 6 months later.

Curt, are you referring to the black switch on the face of the Suburban water heater, that is in the link I posted?

The switch on the model I had previously was not like the one you posted (on/off). It was labeled gas on the left, electric on the right and you set the switch where you wanted. I've not seen the one used on the FR3. But, from what I'm told, the process is the same.

No. It was just a side to side slide switch. No rockers, no light.

Well, I can honestly say I've never seen or heard of one like that. Now you have my curiosity up as to what it is.
Seen similar on fridges though.

It's the same process as on a fridge. You get one or the other. Not both at the same time.

Do you know what brand water heater this pertained to?
Can't say I've ever encountered a Suburban or Atwood like that.
Was it a Forest River product this water heater was installed in?

Never heard of a WH like this either.
I'd also like to hear what brand and model this is.

Yes it was a FR product. A 2011 Salem travel trailer. It was a Surburban WH. What model, I don't know.
If you're telling me you've not seen a WH that is propane/electric, I don't know what to tell you. Most have this type.

Not the water heater that we've not heard of but the way you describe the automatic control switching from propane to 110v.
