The Sleeper Sofa Bar Shield I use, got rid of the spring and bar problem, slides easily under the mattress, and can be stored under the couch cushions when the bed is closed.

This: Air Dream Ultra Sofa Mattress | Air over coil sofa bed upgrade
Just purchased one and used it last month for a week. Works great, very comfortable and folds up in the sofa easily. We'll see how long it lasts.

Our hide-a-bed couch has a blow up mattress. Like you said not very comfortable & it is most likely the springs. So we got a 3/4 inch sheet of plywood. Cut it to 48"x 80" and cut it in half (2 x 24" x 80"). It goes under the mattress against the springs. Now we store the plywood behind the couch & being only 24" wide it stays out of sight. It's not quite as wide as the mattress (48" instead of 60") but makes all the difference in comfort. We tend to leave a space between each piece of plywood. Of course if your "mother-in-law" is coming. Maybe leave the plywood at home that trip!
